Cabin in the Woods is the best Mainstream Horror film to come out since Scream 2. That isn't really saying much because Mainstream horror has been bad, but Cabin in the Woods seriously was something special. Brought horror fans back to the 80s. Grindhouse, Scream 4, Drag Me To Hell are a couple other mainstream horror movies that come to mind that are on the level of the classics from the late 70s, on through the 80s, but Cabin in the Woods was seriously something special for the genre.
We very rarely get good horror/comedies anymore. A lot of people don't realize that THE BEST horror never took itself too seriously. Evil Dead, Nightmare on Elm St, Halloween. Even Horror classics like Carrie had a great story and group of characters. These movies were just as fun as they were scary. These days people think Horror is supposed to be dead serious. They forget that the best forumula for a horror movie is one that doesn't use blood and gore to make a story, but clever ideas instead. Good acting, good story is a key for horror movies and people forget this these days. Cabin in the Woods gave us something completely refreshing. 2012 was a great year for horror thanks to Cabin in the Woods.
It was definitely a tough year for horror as far as depth is concerned, but I cannot say that there are 2 great horror movies every year, like there were in 2012 with Prometheus and Cabin in the Woods. And Prometheus counts as horror if you are sitting in the theater scared shitless when the snake/alien thing is attacking.
You want to see a disappointing year?
Go look at 2011.
Scream 4 was great. Fright Night remake was surprisingly good. After that you have all kinds of stuff like Grave Encounters and Paranormal Activity which is what im talking about when I say BAD STORY. They use the found footage feature as the selling point, instead of making actually a great movie. Not saying these movies are terrible, just saying NOTHING in 2011 was on the level of Cabin in the Woods. 2010 had a lot more depth and some very good horror movies, but still, a great Horror comedy does so much more for me than something like Black Swan, or Insidious. Loved both especially Black Swan.
Man 2010 was pretty crazy though.
Trollhunter, Hatchet 2, My Soul to Take, Stake Land, Let Me In, Tucker and Dale vs Evil. I don't LOVE any of these movies but there was definitely a little bit of a horror movement in 2010.
