Re: Found Footage Films

Found footage can be good if its done in the right way.  I personally liked:

Cloverfield
[REC]
Paranormal Activity
Diary of the Dead
Blair Witch Project

Re: Found Footage Films

Don't poopoo Quarantine too hard. [REC] is easily in my top 5 fave flicks of all time (any genre), and honestly, while Quarantine didn't have the atmosphere or sense of foreboding like the original, but on it's own, it was a very solid flick.

It took a few viewings to really get into [REC]2, but I think it's awesome. Even the "twist" to the origin/meaning of the reason behind the craziness makes sense. Initially I wasn't crazy about it, but it works.

[REC]3 is great, but don't think it's just another [REC] flick, cause while it is, it isn't at the same time. It starts off in the FF genre, and they end up getting too tricky with multiple cameras and after about 20min it goes full on traditional cinema style. Initially I was "Aww man!!", but once it gets rolling, it works and you just go with it.

Looking forward to 4... whenever that happens to show up in any form.

Amber Alert.  Its an instant on flix, and its okay.  Almost good, but a few nonsensical things held it back.

Re: Found Footage Films

Death of a Ghost Hunter (2007)

was really decent, If you can get past the really bad acting!

Re: Found Footage Films

^^
I like how it tied up together at the end.

Re: Found Footage Films

^Yeah the acting was pretty bad, but overall, it was a decent flick.

Re: Found Footage Films

You know what found footage film I really hated? The Tunnel, I hated that such a serious amount it's laughable.

Re: Found Footage Films

^I actually liked that one quite a bit.  Not the best FF piece but I thought it was pretty well done.  I especially liked the way that they distributed the film themselves, allowing people to download it for free, that was a cool idea.

Re: Found Footage Films

Just made this account to put this one out here.

Trollhunter (2010) - http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1740707/

Don't know if this was mentioned before but this was one of my favorites and really introduced me to FF. I watched this in Norwegian with English subtitles, really adds to the atmosphere, check it out if you have time.

Re: Found Footage Films

Subconscious - Director's Cut (2010) - An interesting Greek FF flick.  Not particularly creepy or scary, but at least they tried to do something different.

Re: Found Footage Films

I'm not high on the genre, but from what little I've seen, it's good/great.

I honestly don't see Blair Witch as a FF, but that's imo.

REC
Quarantine
The Last Exorcism
Home Movie

Devil Inside wasn't particularly good.

Re: Found Footage Films

I thought Home Movie was horrible, it's just so all over the place and never finds its footing.

But that's just me! smile

Re: Found Footage Films

Hmm, different folks. I felt for the parents when shit went down and I really liked the disturbing tone throughout.

Re: Found Footage Films

I've been dying to see Home Movie.  It looks really interesting.  I just watched Evidence (2011) and I'll probably write a review about it, but it was just a really nutty film.

Re: Found Footage Films

Blair Witch is presented like a mockumentary, but it is the epitome of found footage. They went missing, and years later the "footage" was "found". Can't get more found footage than that. big_smile

What is this based on?  What do you consider it?

Re: Found Footage Films

I didn't mean to start anything, but I personally don't group Blair Witch with the FF films that came after. That's what I meant when I said I don't consider it a FF film.

Re: Found Footage Films

Just my 2 bananas, but this kind of sums it up for me-

Re: Found Footage Films

Its all good Hypnotic, and of course you're entitled to your opinion.  I was sincerely interested in why you don't consider Blair Witch FF.  We have talked about what makes a movie FF or not quite a bit on here, and there's varying opinions.  However, I don't think I've seen an opinion that Blair Witch isn't one.  It fits every standard I'm aware of.  It was also the first FF movie to be comprised of entirely FF (debatable whether The St. Francisville Experiment was first...made before but released after).

Still curious about your statement.  Why do you group Blair Witch differently than lets say The St. Francisville Experiment, Paranormal Activity and Grave Encounters?

Don't take this as me challenging you or anything.  Just interested in the discussion if you don't mind...or feel free to ignore me too...I'm used to that.  smile

Re: Found Footage Films

I finally saw [REC] not that long ago. And I have to agree with most in here that it is one of the best FFFs. I like it in these type of movies when the cameraman is a professional or semi-professional, like in Diary of the Dead. Too much shaking of camera really annoys me and I think detracts from the movie. Cloverfield was especially bad for that. The story was good and it had likeable and believable characters, a trait sorely lacking in many newer horror movies.

Re: Found Footage Films

Of course Blair Witch is a found footage  for the simple fact that some people do not know whether the movie is real or not after watching it.

Re: Found Footage Films

The Poughkeepsie Tapes definitely chilled me, I watched it whilst laying on the floor at 2:30 in the morning randomly...I laid there in horror after the movie and had to google to double check that it really was fake. I knew that it was by the way it was made and all of the "specialists" talking but...I wasn't too sure. I was sleeping next to a closet on the floor before I moved! Definitely one of my favorites.

Re: Found Footage Films

WOW, and Ghostseeker totally just reminded me of The St. Francisville Experiment...Memories!
