Topic: Eco-Horror Movies: Mother Nature Strikes Back!

Hi everyone,

I'm a huge fan of 'eco-horror movies'; films in which Mother Nature gets her sweet revenge on mankind. From man-eating plants, skin-crawling killer insects and rampant reptiles to blood-thirsty beasts.

There's so many great Eco-Horror films out there from the classics like Jaws and Them! to ozploitation hits like Long Weekend, Italian Knock Offs like The Last Shark as well as Grizzly, Piranha, The Swarm, Little Shop Of Horrors...the list is endless!

There's a new Eco-Horror film that comes out in cinemas next Friday that I cannot wait for called The Bay! It's directed by the dude who made Good Morning Vietnam and Rain Man and is about a mutated parasite (an isopod) that lives in water and quickly infects the whole town causing gruesome panic! It looks AMAZING! A little like Shivers!

What are your favourite Eco-Horror movies of all time?

Squirm
Frogs
Sssss!
Australia, the continent big_smile
Long Weekend
Basically every 50's giant creature movie  (Killer Shrews rule!)

Though I think you may be mixing straight monster films (Jaws) with eco-horror (where people have actively messed with earth's creatures, atomic testing, etc.).

The Ruins (the book is also really good)
The Birds
The Ghost and the Darkness
Frogs
Ticks

Night of The Lepus ensures laughs, I have heard.

^^

Oh, how did I forget that one!!  Stoopid monkey!

Re: Eco-Horror Movies: Mother Nature Strikes Back!

The first movie that popped into my head when you said ECO Horror was Creepshow.  Stephen King gets taken over by a plant from outer space.

The next one I thought of was Evil Dead when the tree rapes the girl in the woods.  Ok maybe it's a demon instead of nature but hey it popped in my head none the less.

And of course the happening.  But that movie was just ok nothing special.

And The Bay was really good.  You will enjoy it.

Re: Eco-Horror Movies: Mother Nature Strikes Back!

^ I started to mention The Happening, but it was such a disaster I didn't even bother. It's a shame, the storyline has potential.

Re: Eco-Horror Movies: Mother Nature Strikes Back!

The Blob. Not necessarily totally Eco but still.

I found The Ruins brilliant BTW.

Re: Eco-Horror Movies: Mother Nature Strikes Back!

The Bay was a good one, definitely check it out!

Im a sucker for the "nature gone amuck" genre myself, some good ones have been mentioned. I'll add

Prophecy (1979)
Lake Placid
Black Water (2008)
Humanoids from the Deep

Don't know if I would put kaiju films into horror, but I totally see your point.

Re: Eco-Horror Movies: Mother Nature Strikes Back!

Ladies and gentlemen, there truly is one film, one film, one film that braves to stand above the rest. One film which takes ecological hysteria to a whole other dimension, one film, one film that shows us humans the errors of our ways. One film, one film which braves the lying zeitgeist and which tells it like it is. One film which never shys away from the nightmarish possibility of zoo animals high on Angel Dust marauding the city streets. One film, one film which will change the way you view cinema and wildlife in general. One film and one film alone...

And tonight I proudly present that film...

Look at that - Fulcento's not crazy - he's being chased by a cheetah! big_smile

Eat your heart out Life of Pi!!!

No doubt, I don't really consider Godzilla horror, though I do believe it was at the time. I just used to watch the old Japanese Godzilla movies incessantly as a child. Word to the wise, never watch Godzilla's Revenge.

Wild Beasts is wild Fulcento.

I enjoyed BURNING BRIGHT a whole damn lot.
Freaking always LOVED Briana Evigan but the most awesome is the kid, Charlie Tahan, the way he played the autistic little brother with the fear of a tiger in a closed up house is just BRILLIANT!!!
