Re: DirtyGirl's Horror Movie A Day Challenge

Mar 21 - A Resurrection (2013) - A high school psychologist tries to help a troubled student who believes that his older brother has returned from the dead to seek revenge against the classmates that were responsible for his death.  Starts out pretty good, bogs down a bit then gets kind of silly.  Still, a decent flick.  It was also Michael Clarke Duncan's last film.  3/5.  First watch.

Re: DirtyGirl's Horror Movie A Day Challenge

^^not a bad thriller.  It does get slow at times though^^

Night Gallery-  watched a few shows from the first season.  The show is a who's who of horror actors in the 70s.  The one that stood out had Roddy McDowell in it.

Deadly Blessing-   Watched my new Blu ray version of Deadly Blessing.  I think I have a new fear of snakes!   And the spider scene freaked me out more than the first time I saw it.  ***shudder***

Re: DirtyGirl's Horror Movie A Day Challenge

Maybe you can help me out here, Mar'.  Way back in the late 70s I saw an episode of Night Gallery but don't remember the name of the episode.  The only bit I remember about it was there was a guy sitting with his back to a mirror (I think it was a guy, anyway) and when he turned and looked into the mirror...I don't know.  I turned my head, because I spooked easy back then  (I was only like 7 or 8 years old, sue me lol ).

I thought I caught a glimpse of his reflection, in which he looked like a monster, or a zombie, or something rotted...not sure.  I have no idea what episode it was, but I'm 100% positive it was Night Gallery.  Have you come across an episode like that yet?

Re: DirtyGirl's Horror Movie A Day Challenge

I will have a look for it.  I haven't seen it yet, but I am in the middle of season 1.  I think it is even better than the old twilight zone!  I will let you know...

Re: DirtyGirl's Horror Movie A Day Challenge

Spent the weekend catching my wife up on seasons 1 and 2 of The Walking Dead.  I can't believe that she is actually really getting into the show and enjoying it.  She is constatntly giving me s**t about all the horror movies that I watch.  Now I've got to find most of season 3 for her.

Mar 23 - Dead of Night (1977) - I wasn't overly impressed with this anthology.  The third story was the only one that I found enjoyable.  2.5/5.  First watch.

Mar 24 - The Wicked (2013) - A Group of teenagers test the legend of an immortal witch and get more than they bargained for.  It actually was a halfway decent flick.  It comes off a bit like a SyFy movie, cheesy and corney with bad acting and cheap FX, but because they do show a boob, I knew that it couldn't have come from SyFy.  Still, a fairly entertaining flick.  2.5/5.  First watch.

Re: DirtyGirl's Horror Movie A Day Challenge

The Walking Dead seems to be a common denominator between fans and non-fans of horror.  I can't think of anyone who doesn't like the show.  Even my mom and younger sister, who are not fans of horror at all, love the show.

That's an accomplishment in and of itself.

Re: DirtyGirl's Horror Movie A Day Challenge

^Yup shows the quality of the show that it can hook non-horror fans.

Re: DirtyGirl's Horror Movie A Day Challenge

Mar 28 - Cowboys & Aliens (2011) - Not really horror, but I did enjoy it.  3/5.  First watch.

Mar 30 and 31 - Got my wife caught up on season 3 of The Walking Dead so that we could watch the season finale.

Apr 1 - Cemetery Gates (2006) - Two bungling eco-activists unleash a genetically mutated Tasmanian Devil in a woodland cemetery where a group of college students are filming a low budget zombie movie.  It was all done tongue in cheek so it was definitely campy and cheesy, but it did feature the pony tailed Reggie Bannister and cameos by Greg Nicotero and Howard Berger as a couple of stoners.  2.5/5.  First watch.

Re: DirtyGirl's Horror Movie A Day Challenge

Apr 2 - Gou yeung yi sang aka Dr. Lamb (1992) - Recounts the exploits of Lam Kor-wan, a deranged taxi driver who strangled then raped and dismembered 4 young Chinese women in 1982.  He photographed and videotaped his exploits and kept some of their sexual organs as souvenirs.  A pretty sick tale, though the movie was hampered by poor subtitles and the occasional silly english dubing.  2/5.  First watch.

Apr 2 - Modus Anomali (2012) - A man awakens buried in the woods with no memory of how he got there.  Now he must piece together his memories with the clues he finds in order to save his two children before they fall prey to a mysterious killer stalking the family.  Actually a pretty decent little low budget Indonesian flick with a nice twist on the slasher genre.  The initial twist is not too hard to see coming, but then they throw in another nice twist in the reveal.  3.5/5.  First watch.

Re: DirtyGirl's Horror Movie A Day Challenge

Apr 3 - Entity (2012) - A small crew from the English TV show Darkest Secrets, along with a Psychic and their Russian guide, set out for a remote location in a Siberian forest to try and solve the mystery of 34 unidentified bodies that were discovered there in 1998.  When they find an ominous abandoned building not far from the location, they think that they may have found the key to solving the case.  Can they find the truth or will they themselves become part of the continuing mystery.  I've had my eye on this one for awhile, and for the most part, it did not disapoint.  The basic plot has been covered before in movies like Grave Encounters, though the setting here is a bit different.  And like it predecesors, the action consists mostly of sounds and things that happen off camera.  But is does differ in that it is shot traditionally for the most part employing cinema verite only part of the time.  Perhaps not on par with Grave Encounters, but an entertaining watch just the same.  3.5/5.  First watch.

Re: DirtyGirl's Horror Movie A Day Challenge

Apr 4 - 13 Eerie (2013) - Vying for a coveted trainee position with the FBI, six forensic undergrads travel to a remote island where they will team up and try to determine the cause of death of three mutilated cadavers strategically placed by their professor and his FBI cohort.  But when a forth body is found and students begin to disapear, it becomes clear that the island hides a sinister past.  For a direct to DVD flim it is really pretty well done.  An original story line with a nice cast that includes Katharine Isabelle as well as some other recognizable faces from genre films, and some nice grue with practical effects.  My only complaints would be the Resident Evil like zombies and the goofy ending.  But I will be generous and give it a 3.5/5.  First watch.

Re: DirtyGirl's Horror Movie A Day Challenge

Apr 5 - Kwaidan (1964) - A collection of four unique tales, each adapted from traditional Japanese ghost stories, where the protagonist is confronted by spirits.  A beautifully done movie, and I can see why it is considered such a classic.  Apparantly, it was the most expensive Japanese movie for its time, and that certainly shows.  Unfortunately, I found it to be rather boring and extremely long, clocking in at 2 hours and forty some minutes.  Visually, worth a watch if you can sit through it all.  3/5.  First watch.

Apr 6 - Dark Skies (2012) - A surburban family's seemingly normal life is rocked by an escalating series of disturbing events, leading them to the belief that a terrifying force is after them.  Wow, what a pleasant surprise for a PG-13 offering.  Creepy and well done, giving me goosebumps on a couple of occasions.  4/5.  First watch.

Apr 7 - Koi no tsumi aka Guilty of Romance (2011) - The tale  of three Japanese women and their lives, seen through the looking glass of sex, words, madness, death, family and the tragic event tying them all together.   Shion Sono's follow up to the fantastic Cold Fish.  Like Cold Fish, Guilty of Romance is loosly based on a true story, the murder of Yasuko Watanabe in 1997.  Watanabe was a senior economic researcher at the Tokyo Electric Power Company (TEPCO) who moonlighted as a street prostitute at night.  At first, I was like, WTF did I just watch.  I wasn't quite sure what to make of it, as at first glance it appeared to be yet another odd Japanese movie.  But I did some reading up on the film today, and I feel a little more comfortable in my understanding of it.  It does feature plenty of nudity, especially by the lovely Megumi Kagurazaka, sex and some gruesome imagery.  Not quite on par with Cold Fish and perhaps one that will not appeal to everyone, but still a good flick that probably will warrant a second watch in time.  3.5/5.  First watch.

Re: DirtyGirl's Horror Movie A Day Challenge

Apr 9 - Storage 24 (2012) - On their way to the storage facility where he shares a unit with his now ex-girlfriend Shelley, Charlie and his buddy Mark are unaware that a military plan has crashed in the middle of London spilling its classified cargo throughout the city.  When they arrive at the unit they are surprised to find Shelley and her friends already there.  When the security system fails, locking them inside, an already unpleasant situation becomes down right terrifying when they discover that another unwelcome guest, courtesy of the plane crash, is already lurking within the facility.  Not a bad flick.  Nice suspense with a bit of comedic relief and gore.  My only complaints would be the sound, the sound FX were too loud and the dialogue too soft, and the goofy looking creature and ending.  3/5.  First watch.

Apr 10 - Lucky Bastard (2013) -  When seemingly mild-mannered fan Dave is selected as the latest "Lucky Bastard" and is invited to have sex with porn star Ashley Saint, it appears to be just another installment for the crew of the Lucky Bastard porn website and another fan having his wildest dreams come true.  But things go horrifically wrong when Dave is humiliated on camera and seeks retribution against the cast and crew.  Really, not a bad idea for a found footage film, and at least it is not the standard FF plot line.  Unfortunately though, the delivery and presentation were flawed.  All of the characters, with the exception of Mike the website owner, were less than believable, and the film itself just has a cheap feel to it.  There are a couple of nice looking ladies who spend considerable time in the buff, but apart from the subject matter, I can't see a reason why it would be rated NC-17.  Overall, just kind of boring.  2/5.  First watch.

Re: DirtyGirl's Horror Movie A Day Challenge

Apr 11 - Nine Miles Down (2009) - In the Sahara Desert, a multi-national team of scientists is attempting to reach a massive cavern 9 miles below the earth's crust, drilling further into the earth's surface than has ever been done before.  When all contact is lost with the remote station, security officer Thomas "Jack" Jackman is dispatched to investigate.  Not too shaby for a low budget flick.  An engaging plot with some good creepy moments.  3/5.  First watch.

Re: DirtyGirl's Horror Movie A Day Challenge

Apr 12 - Under the Bed (2012) - After starting a house fire that killed his mother, Neal is sent to live with his Aunt in Florida.  After two years there, he returns to find that his younger brother Paulie has moved into his old room, and like himself two years earlier, he is being tormented by something under the bed.  Now the brothers must team up to try and defeat the creature before it manages to get them.  Were it not for the R rating and the occasional F bomb, you might think you were watching a Goosebumps movie, at least for the first 3/4 of the film that is.  But that changes in a big way in the final act when the creature reveals itself and goes about its bloody business.  The movie does have its issues, but for me, the creature and grue in the final act made up for those flaws.  A fun watch.  4/5.  First watch.

Apr 12 - Blue Sunshine (1978) - After a string of bizarre murders in which hairless psychopaths have violently attacked their victims, Jerry begins to suspect that the cause may be a form of LSD know as Bule Sunshine that the assailants all took a decade before.  But his connections to the murders make him a prime suspect.  Can he find the truth before the police close in on him.  An interesting premise for a film.  Kind of goofy and silly by today's standards, but still an okay flick.  2.5/5.  First watch.

Apr 12 - Expiration (2011) - Four participants sign up to take part in a mysterious medical test.  But when they awaken, they find themselves trapped in an abandoned hospital.  Now in addition to trying to figure out what part each of them plays in the experiment, they must fend for themselves against the corporation and the remants of previous failed experiments.  Not too shaby for a low budget South African.  The budget shows in some areas, but oveall, it was a nice take on the infection/zombie genre with an interesting twist in the reveal.  3/5.  First watch.

Apr 13 - Strange Circus (2005) - The erotic novelist Taeko is writing a morbid story of a family destroyed by incest, murder and abuse. Her assistant, Yuji, sets on a mission to uncover the reality of this story, but the reality might be too much to bear.  Strange film indeed, Shion Sono really does have a thing for stories about dysfunctional families, and this is one twisted family.  3.5/5.  First watch.

Apr 14 - Sightseers (2012) - Chris and his girlfriend Tina set out on a caravan tour of the British countryside, but events conspire against them and soon their dream vacation takes a very wrong turn.  A quirky black comedy that does have its moments.  A fun watch, but not quite as funny as I had hoped.  3/5.  First watch.

Re: DirtyGirl's Horror Movie A Day Challenge

Apr 15 - The Guard Post aka GP506 (2008) - At Gurard Post 506 on the frontline inside the demilitarized zone between North and South Korea, 19 of the 21 soldiers stationed there have been murdered, one is missing and the lone survivor lies in a coma.  Army investigator Sergeant Major Noh is sent in to lead the investigation.  He is tasked with finding the truth or a way to cover up the incident before HQ sends in forces at 6:00 AM the following morning to clean up the mess.  But will finding the truth put him and his team at risk to suffer the same fate as the men that were stationed there.  A well done South Korean military horror that plays on the traditional themes of the subgenre while taking a refreshing angle with its story line.  It does become confusing at times as they flash back and forth between the present and past events which are often shown repeated times, but if you pay attention, it all becomes clear by the end of the film.  Well acted, for the most part, creepy and atmospheric.  3.5/5.  First watch.

Re: DirtyGirl's Horror Movie A Day Challenge

Apr 16 - Ripper: Letter from Hell (2001) - Soon after Molly joins a college study group fixated on solving a local campus murder, members of the group begin to turn up dead, the modus operandi of the killings mirroring those of London's legendary Jack the Ripper.  Sounded cool, but it wasn't.  The story was convoluted, acting poor, I didn't care about any of the characters and it was way too long.  By the time the action really started, I was already bored with it.  2/5.  First watch.

Re: DirtyGirl's Horror Movie A Day Challenge

Apr 17 - The Convent (2000) - In 1959, teenager Christine storms into the convent.   Armed with a shotgun and a can of gas, she kills all of the Nuns and the Priest.  40 years later, with the convent abandoned and rumored to be haunted by the spirits of the Nuns, Clorissa and her friends break into the convent for a night of fun.  But their fun soon becomes horror when they unleash the demonic forces of the convent.  Kind of like a poor man's Night of the Demons, only with a shotgun toting ass kicking Adrienne Barbeau.  Bad script, bad acting and cheesy practical effects, but still a fun watch.  3/5.  First watch.

Re: DirtyGirl's Horror Movie A Day Challenge

Apr 18 - Kolobos (1999) - Responding to a classified add, struggling artist Kyra lands what she thinks is her dream job.  She and 4 other young adults will spend 3 months at a mountain resort (really just a suburban house) to participate in an experimental film where their every move will be recorded by cameras placed throughout the house.  Once inside, they find themselves trapped with someone or something picking them off one by one.  Boy was I dupped on this one.  I read a couple of positive reviews comparing this favorably to My Little Eye.  While the basic plot is similar, this low budget offering is clearly inferior.  Just poorly done and only mildly entertaining, with perhaps the only highlight being a very quick cameo by Linnea Quigley.  2/5.  First and last watch.

Re: DirtyGirl's Horror Movie A Day Challenge

Apr 19 - Suicide Club (2001) - When 54 high school girls throw themselves in front of a subway train it appears to be only the beginning of a string of suicides around the country. Does the answer lie with the all-girl group Desert who have become very popular with the country's young people? Detective Kuroda tries to find the answer, which isn't as simple as one could hope.  I seem to be on a Shion Sono kick lately, having watched 3 or 4 of his movies in the last couple of weeks.  I'd have to say that this is my least favorite so far.  Just didn't do much for me.  Plus the music of "Desert" really annoyed me.  2.5/5.   First watch.

Apr 20 - The Wax Mask (1997) - Paris, 1900: a couple are horribly murdered by a masked man with a metal claw who rips their hearts out. The sole survivor and witness to the massacre is their daughter Sonia. Twelve years later in Rome, a new wax museum is opened whose main attractions are the lifelike recreations of gruesome murder scenes. Upon a bet, a young man attempts to spend the night in the museum but is found dead the next morning. Then as people start disappearing from the streets of Rome, the halls of the wax museum begin filling with new figures.  An interesting colaboration between Dario Argento and Lucio Fulci.  It is really nicely done and has the look and feel of a Hammer film, plus the lovely Romina Mondello.  But there is one scene that looks awfully similar to a scene in The Terminator.  Silly in some parts, but still a good watch.  3/5.  First watch.

Apr 21 - It's in the Blood (2012) - Estranged from his father for years, October returns to the rural Texas town where his father is the Sheriff.  In an attempt to reconnect, father and son decide to take a day hike.  But when they find themselves stranded in the wilderness, they find that they must confront the horrors of their past if they want to escape with their lives.  A pleasant surprise, really well done for what appears to be a low budget flick.  Original story, believeable characters, good acting and creepy atmoshpere.  It might not appeal to all, but I really enjoyed it.  3.5/5.  First watch.

Re: DirtyGirl's Horror Movie A Day Challenge

Apr 22 - Resolution (2012) - After recieving a video showing his friend's drug induced shenanigans and map to his location, Michael decides to make one last attempt to help Chris end his Meth addiction.  Arriving at Chris' remote cabin, Michael chains Chris to a pipe in the cabin with the intention of forcing him to sober up over the course of the next seven days.  But as he waits for Chris to come down, Michael begins to explore the cabin and its surroundings, stumbling upon a trail of strange clues that seem to hint at the cabin's past and the odd events and characters that it seems to attract.  I've had this one on my list for some time, but after watching it, I am not quite sure what to make of it.  It is creative and very original, and for an indie, really well made.  But it is also a slow burn that is intended to make the viewer think.  Perhaps it was becuase I didn't pay close enough attention, but by the ending, I felt a little cheated and confused.  I definitely plan on giving it another watch, but for now.  3/5.  First watch.

Re: DirtyGirl's Horror Movie A Day Challenge

Apr 23 - The Lords of Salem (2012) - Heidi, one third of "The Big H Radio Team" in Salem Massachusetts recieves a wooden box containing a record from what she assumes is a new band called The Lords.  When she and her cohorts, the two Hermans, play the record on air, the music awakens something in Heidi, triggering debilitating headaches and flashbacks to the Salem Witch Trials.  But unbeknowst to Heidi, the music also awakens something in her home town of Salem, something long thought dead.
Not at all what I was expecting.  It really shows Rob's growth as a film maker.  He thankfully ditches his trademark "White Trash" context filled with violence and gore, and instead gives us a trippy psychedelic slow burn that is a throwback to horror movies of the 60's and 70's.  Visually, it was impressive, even if some of the imagery might be viewed as offensive.  Big deal.  However, as nice as it was to look at, I also found it to be a bit boring.  The story meanders and I never really felt any attachment to any of the characters.  Sheri is nice to look at, particularly her back side which is displayed frequently, but I think the movie might have benefited from a stronger lead.  It is funny to read all of the reviews, somepeople obviously hate the movie just because they hate Rob Zombie, which I can't understand.  He seems like a pretty cool guy, and one thing is for sure, he is a true fan of the genre.  So while I don't view it as a great flick, I have to give props to Rob for doing something he wanted to do which was both creative and original.  3.5/5.  First watch.

Re: DirtyGirl's Horror Movie A Day Challenge

Apr 25 - Mama (2013) - The story was so so and some of the CGI was overdone, but I liked how they worked the original short into the film and overall, I enjoyed it.  3.5/5.  First watch.

Apr 26 - Nude Nuns with big Guns (2010) - Great title, the movie, not so great.  There were plenty of nuns who do spend plenty of time in the buff, but unfortunately most of them looked like real nuns.  Not something one really needs to see.  Had a few fun moments, but it was too long and drawn out with periods of little to no action.  2/5.  First watch.

Apr 26 - Maniac (2012) - The whole movie is shot POV with Elijah Wood's character only visible when he sees his reflection in something.  There is one cool scene when he catches his reflection and it looks just like the poster from the original movie.  I thought back and the only scene that I can recall that was not POV was the ending.  At first the POV was kind of cool, but afer awhile it became rather annoying.  And there was the fact that Elijah's voice seemed to be coming from far off, as if coming from another person off camera.  Elijah does play his role well and I liked the added back story of his mother and his childhood, but the gore is really not the highlight of the movie like it was in the original.  It is brutal, but not as gorey as the original.  I just found it to be okay.  3/5.  First watch.

Apr 27 - I Didn't Come Here to Die (2010) - The story of six young volunteers working on a humanitarian project in the woods. Horrific accidents, rash decisions and the unpredictability of human nature leads them all to the same disturbing conclusion. Volunteer work can be a killer.  A really low budget straight to DVD flick that was only midly entertaining.  2/5.  First watch.

Apr 28 - My Amityville Horror (20120 - Daniel Lutz recounts his version of the infamous Amityville haunting that terrified his family in 1975.  An interesting documentary that really brought back memories of the late 70's and early 80's, reading the book and seeing the movie and the subsequent debate over the validity of the Lutz's story.  Very interesting to see and hear the stories of some of the people who participated in the original investigation.  3/5.  First watch.

Apr 28 - Naked Lunch (1991) - Not a horror movie, but damn if it wasn't out there.  Leave it to Cronenberg to put someting like this on celluloid.  3/5.  First watch.

Re: DirtyGirl's Horror Movie A Day Challenge

Apr 29 - Errors of the Human Body (2012) - After the death of his infant son and the subsequent collapse of his marriage, Geneticist Geoff Burton finds his career stalled in Boston.  He accepts a position at a renown research facility in Germany where he is reunited with his former intern and love interest Rebekka, now a respected researcher in her own right.  But when a potentially lethal virus is created within the lab, Geoff is shocked to discover that he is not only the unwitting cause, but also its first victim.
A very effective and believable science fiction/thriller/horror movie from first time director Eron Sheean, co-writer of 2011's The Divide.  It is definitely a slow burn, intended to make one think, but it is not overly intellectual in its approach.  At the same time, it is not dumbed down to the point of being ridiculous.  The wintery German landscapes, sterile halls of the facility and the odd cast of characters that occupy them provide a dark and ominous backdrop for the story and subject matter.  And then there is the ending.  It is very quiet, but that doesn't make it any less powerful.  3.5/5.  First watch.

Re: DirtyGirl's Horror Movie A Day Challenge

Apr 30 - Reverb (2007) - Struggling rock musician Alex and his band mate Maddy lock themselves in a recording studio over the course of two nights to finish the track that will resurrect his career.  But when they sample an old record for the track, they discover a hidden voice, which when played, sets in motion a series of horrific events.  Now they must try to decipher the evil message before they resurrect something other than Alex's musical career.  Sounded like a cool synopsis, but unfortunately the movie was pretty dull, with most of the action coming through spooky noises and odd flashback sequences.  It was original at least, but it definitely could have been done better.  2.5/5.   First watch.
