Re: DirtyGirl's Horror Movie A Day Challenge

May 3 - Texas Chainsaw 3D (2013) - When Heather travels to Texas to collect her inheritance, she unravels the mystery of her true family history.  But when she and her three friends arrive, they stumble upon the deadly part of the bequest that lives in the basement and wields a chainsaw.   lt starts off pretty good, with flashbacks of the original film and a little added back story, then then goes right into your standard slasher fare with attractive kids doing stupid things and being brutally killed as a result.  Then they flip the story a bit, which I actually kind of enjoyed.  But overall, minus the excellent FX work by KNB, it felt like a cheap money grab to cash in on the Texas Chainsaw name. Just okay.  3/5.  First watch.

May 4 - The Pit (1981) - Jamie Benjamin is a loner whose odd behavior makes him the target of his school mates and most of the townspeople.  But when he makes a disturbing discovery in the forest he finds the means to seek revenge on those that have wronged him.  Typical 80's fare with a Goosebumps/Gate vibe.  Jamie is a creepy kid, but on the whole, the acting is pretty weak and the movie is pretty dull.  It picks up a bit in the final acts, but it is nothing to write home about.  2.5/5.  First watch.

May 5 - Hellgate (1990) - A group of friends investigate a ghost town with a mysterious past and discover Josie, a woman murdered in the 50's now reanimated by her father to seek revenge against all strangers.  Just bad, and not bad in a good way only either.  A little gratuitous nudity which was nice, but apart from that, perhaps the only highlight was recognizing Ron Palillo, better known as Arnold Horshack from Welcome Back, Kotter.  1.5/5.  First watch.

May 5 - Sea of Dust (2008) - I tried 3 times to sit through this and just couldn't.  I made it about two thirds of the way through and finally gave up.  Supposedly a nod to the Hammer films, a brief cameo by Ingrid Pitt hardly justifies that claim, it is just a poorly done mess.  Since I didn't finish it, I will refrain from giving it a score.

Re: DirtyGirl's Horror Movie A Day Challenge

May 6 - Slasher House (2012) - Red awakens alone in a cell of an abandoned asylum with no memory of who she is or how she got there.  As the door to her cell opens, she discovers that she is not alone in the asylum.  She is surrounded by the worlds most notorious serial killers, and it is clear that there is a deadly game afoot.  Can she unravel her past and use the clues she discovers to determine her part in the game in time to be the final girl?
I realize this is a low budget flick, and in some respects they did a decent job.  The story is cool and the film itself has a nice look to it.  But the sound was horrible, with background noise, echo and sound FX drowning out the barely audible dialogue.  The gore was very limited with some of the FX being downright hokey, like knives pulled out of bodies with no blood on them.  Then there was the fact that there were only 4 killers, I guess that was probably due to the budget, but I would have liked to see more action.  I was expecting more from this one, and unfortunately, it did not deliver.  2.5/5.  First watch.

Re: DirtyGirl's Horror Movie A Day Challenge

May 8 - In a Glass Cage (1987) - Stricken with grief over his past deeds as a pedophilic doctor at a Nazi concentration camp, Klaus attempts to commit suicide by jumping from the roof of the Spanish Villa where he has resided since the war.  Paralyzed as a result of the fall, he is confined to an iron lung and requires the constant care of his wife Griselda,  Rena his daughter and their housekeeper.  When mysterious teenager Angelo arrives at the villa, Klaus, sensing a connection to the teen, convinces Griselda to allow Angelo to stay on as his live in nurse.  Through his care and interaction with Angelo, it becomes clear to Klaus that Angelo was one of his many victims.  But as Angelo's  behavior becomes increasingly odd, it is not entirely clear what his intentions are for Klaus and his family.
Another one that I found on someone's list of most disturbing/controversial movies.  Come to find out, it is on a lot of these types of lists, and given the subject matter, it certainly deserves to be there.  I almost didn't watch it.  Not because of the subject matter, but rather because I had a difficult time finding the time to watch it.  I am glad that I did finally find the time, because even though the subject matter is really heavy, it really is a well done film.  It certainly will not appeal to everyone, it is long and slow, but in addition to the disturbing action, there are some really creepy, almost gothic horror scenes in the film.  There is a lot going on in the film, and through some reading today, I really have a greater appreciation for the movie.  3.5/5.  First watch.

Re: DirtyGirl's Horror Movie A Day Challenge

I was doing this when Mary started it because I felt it was the most fun thing and I got so far behind.  sad I made it to the end of March doing one a day then just missed one day and couldn't catch up.  i'll play catchup!

Re: DirtyGirl's Horror Movie A Day Challenge

I admire DirtyGirl and alien so much. I could never catch up, I watch a lot of Horror movies but I watch more mainstream ones so I started but could never hold up.

Re: DirtyGirl's Horror Movie A Day Challenge

I still miss a day or two here and there guys.  I try to make them up on the weekends, but it is difficult even then, especially now that the weather is nicer and I have plenty of stuff to do around the house.  And now with baseball and the Stanley Cup finals in full swing, it is hard to find the time some nights.  I love to see what you all are watching, helps to add titles to my ever growing list. smile  Keep posting your stuff when you can.

And by the way kXnPunk, I think that I recall that you enjoyed Thale right?  I just read online that there is going to be a sequel!

Re: DirtyGirl's Horror Movie A Day Challenge

yeah I saw that somewhere too, might even be here and I just can't wait to see that. My favorite Norway Horror one with Next Door. Even more than the masterpiece Dead Snow.

Oh to H3LL with it, I'll rewatch Thale tonight after Hannibal. smile

Re: DirtyGirl's Horror Movie A Day Challenge

I pretty much watch a movie every day, sometimes 2, so I should do this too, I'll think about it, although I don't always watch horror, but 99% of the time unless I am not home I watch a movie at night.
Very cool to see this though, I saw some "friends" on Facebook do this and it was cool to see what they would watch, also gives yourself lots of new ones to seek.

Next Door is a cool one, it has been a long time so I need to revisit that one and give Thale another watch one of these days.

VS, you should post the horror stuff you watch here too.  I love to see what everyone is watching and get new titles to add to my list. smile

May 9 - The Body aka El Cuerpo (2012) - Upon her return from a business trip in Los Angeles, femme fatale Mayka Villaverde dies suddenly of a heart attack.  When her body mysteriously disappears from the morgue later that night, detective Jaime Peña and his crew are called in to investigate.  Their suspicions naturally fall on her boy-toy husband Alex, who stands to inherit her considerable wealth.  As they question him at the morgue, his answers and actions would seem to be incriminating, but could the strange events that surround the case point to an even more sinister explanation?
Another really well done Spanish thriller.  I've had this one on my list for some time, and was glad to have the opportunity to finally watch it.  It is a long film, but it kept me engaged with plenty of twists and turns along the way and an ending that I definitely did not see coming.  3.5/5.  First watch.

Re: DirtyGirl's Horror Movie A Day Challenge

I pretty much post the horror stuff I watch in the last horror movie you watched section, but I could post it here, I just have an issue keeping up to date, as in watching stuff and posting about probably 1 out of 5 that I watch haha.

I do want to say though that its good to see you give Texas Chainsaw a 3/5. I mean it certainly is not a great horror, but I thnk it does get too much hate, to me it was better than at least the 4th one, and it tried to do something different with the story which I thought was brave. I think the main problem was that it isn't really all that well made. Future films in the series would need a different director.

Re: DirtyGirl's Horror Movie A Day Challenge

^I just copy my stuff over from that thread and add a date VS.  For me, it is a little easier to track it in this thread.  But yeah, if I don't post every day, it is sometimes difficult to jar the old memory about what I watched.  Especially on the weekends when I usually don't get on a computer.

Yeah, TC was a decent flick.  The first half didn't do much for me, but I liked how they flipped things in the second half.

The Innkeepers I could watch every day and not get sick of it.  Mostly because I love Ti West and am a friend of Pat Healy, but it is a great movie, too.

I can only imagine that's not the same Pat Healy that submitted Jim Miller a couple of weekends ago.

Re: DirtyGirl's Horror Movie A Day Challenge

May 10 - Jack's Back (1988) - A serial killer in Los Angeles celebrates Jack the Ripper's 100th birthday by committing similar murders.  A young doctor is suspected of the crimes until he too is murdered.
Uneventful for the most part, but still a decent flick, especially since it stars Cynthia Gibb, who is such a little cutie.  3/5.  First watch.

May 11 - Shock aka Beyond the Door II (1977) - A young couple is terrorized in their new home when the spirit of her ex-husband possesses their son.
The kid was kind of creepy, and annoying to boot, but that was about it.  The rest I found to be rather boring.  2/5.  First watch.

May 11 - Viy (1967) - After a frightening encounter with a Witch, a young priest is ordered to preside over the wake of a young woman in a remote village.  Armed only with his faith, he must spend three nights alone with her body in a small wooden church.
I've had this flick out of the Soviet Union on my list since hearing about the remake several years ago.  It is not really creepy or scary by any means,  and is perhaps more of a fantasy film, but it is humorous at times and beautifully shot.  A fun film that is very reminiscent of classic Hollywood movies.  3/5.  First watch.

May 12 - The Mad Butcher (1971) - After his release from a mental hospital, Otto Lehman tries to regain his status as the best butcher in Vienna, when in a fit of rage, he accidentally kills his nagging wife.  But how will he dispose of the body?  Well by adding it to his sausages of course.  As word of his tasty sausages spreads around Vienna, other people in Otto's life begin to disappear.
Nothing great, but a fun little black comedy.  3/5.  First watch.

Re: DirtyGirl's Horror Movie A Day Challenge

May 13 - Aftershock (2012) - In Chile, a group of six friends are partying in an underground nightclub when a massive 8.8 earthquake hits the city.  But as they struggle to escape their underground tomb, they quickly learn that reaching the surface is just the beginning of their nightmare.
A disaster/horror movie, think of it as Earthquake on steroids or Eli Roth does Earthquake.  Not a great flick, but it was entertaining.  Reading some of the uber negative reviews on IMDB I have to wonder what exactly these viewers were expecting to see, Out of Africa?  It's an Eli Roth film, so of course it's pointless.  Story, dialogue, acting and all of that superfluous stuff is going to take a back seat to action and violence.  It was originally rated NC-17 and had to be cut to get an R rating, so I'd be curious to see what was cut.  3/5.  First watch.

Re: DirtyGirl's Horror Movie A Day Challenge

May 15 - The Butcher (2007) - Four people awaken in a dirty barn stall, bound, with video cameras strapped to their heads.  To their horror, they discover that they are to be the stars in director Kim's latest masterpiece, a snuff film shot from the perspective of the victims as well as the killers.
Yet another torture-porn offering, this time from Korea.  The idea sounded intriguing, but unfortunately, you never feel connected to the victims or get the feeling that you are a part of the action.  Too much is lost in the flailing about of the victims, which constitutes most of the film.  If you dislike shaky cam movies, definitely avoid this one.  And as far as TP movies go, it is pretty light on the grue.  There are really only a couple of cringe worthy scenes, but nothing like Grotesque or Hostel.  To me, it all seemed so pointless.  2/5.  First watch.

Re: DirtyGirl's Horror Movie A Day Challenge

May 16 - Dark Circles (2013) - When their son Tanner is born, Alex and Penny decide to trade in their urban lifestyle for the peace and quite of a house in the country.  But their dream home turns out to be less than idyllic as the constant noise from a nearby construction site and the sleep deprivation caused by caring for an infant has them both seeing things.  Are the visions real, or is there a force at work in the house determined to tear their lives apart?
A bit of a slow burn, but this offering from After Dark originals 2 has shades of Inside and The Baby's Room and actually turns out to be a pretty creepy little flick, especially for anyone who is a parent.  Nicely done.  3.5/5.  First watch.
