Topic: Check out the tracklisting for my 4-CD mix set!

I recently used my RCA dual-deck CD-recorder to put together a 4-CD mix compilation of some of my favorite songs. I've had it in mind to put this together for some time. I've often thought that certain songs by certain artists would go really good together on a mix disc, and slowly the track listing started to coalesce in my mind.

Mind you, these aren't necessarily my favorite songs of all time, and there are quite a few artists here who don't quite crack my own personal Top 40. It's just a collection of songs that, for whatever reason, I thought would flow together well.

For that's the key, you see: The overall flow of things! I guess a lot of people think making a mix CD is easy, right? Just randomly throw whatever the hell you like onto the pile, you know? Wrong-o!! There happens to be a fine art to the process of compiling a mix CD. You have to think programmatically! Just ask yourself: What would make a good opening track (overture)? What would make a good closing number (finale)? And in between, there's the issue of pacing, how many fast songs or slow songs you've got in a row, whether there's enough of a contrast in mood from one song to another, or whether the shift in mood is too jarring...

You see? Endless questions! As you can imagine, I really pulled a few all-nighters with these! big_smile So here's what I came up with:

20. Midnight Radio / Hedwig & The Angry Inch (2001)
21. The Burning Down / King's X (1989)

Well...whaddaya think? big_smile As you can see, I didn't necessarily go for the big hits. Yeah, there are a couple, but not many. I may have had quite a few big-name acts, but the songs I picked weren't necessarily the first ones that would come to most people's minds if I were to drop the band's name. And I've got quite a few obscurities here, too (some of them out of print)...

So, what would you put on your mix disc(s)? smile

Re: Check out the tracklisting for my 4-CD mix set!

Well? What do you guys think? big_smile

It seems that no one has replied yet. I'm eager to know what others think of my track selection. Do you think the whole thing flows together nicely? What suggestions would you make for further volumes?

What sorts of music would you put on your mix discs?? cool

Re: Check out the tracklisting for my 4-CD mix set!

nice mix, very eclectic.

Re: Check out the tracklisting for my 4-CD mix set!

Thanks! smile Just about the only thing that all the songs on my mix set have in common is that to one extent or another, they could all be described as rock songs. Sometimes I think that the rock music genre has become a bit too split and fragmented. You know, we've got heavy metal, punk rock, classic rock, prog rock, glam rock, alternative, grunge, etc. Even individual rock sub-genres are split into further tribes: In the case of punk rock, we've got hardcore, emo, goth, rockabilly retro, etc.

At the risk of sounding full of myself, I think a CD mix set like this would help to get the point across that all these different rock genres and sub-genres (at their best) probably have a lot more similarities than differences, and that they have more in common than some might think!

Re: Check out the tracklisting for my 4-CD mix set!

I am a bigtime believer in the power of a good mix, and because of that, I hesitate to put all my eggs in one basket, instead creating smaller playlists with themes and purposes.  Example, my lawn mowing mix I've mentioned elsewhere in here.

I was stunned to see Robin Trauer in there.  Haven't heard him since I was a little girl.  My dad's a guitarist, so he brought me up with this... and Thin Lizzy, and Be Bop Deluxe.

Nice work, Darth.

Re: Check out the tracklisting for my 4-CD mix set!

have to warn you - I tend to avoid any posts with "check out..." in the title b/c it is usually some jackass spammer.

Re: Check out the tracklisting for my 4-CD mix set!

Okay, folks! You wanna give me a hand with the next batch? big_smile

So here's the thing to do: Go over the (admittedly huge) list of mix discs I've compiled so far, figure out who the "regulars" are who routinely pop up on each volume (every two discs), figure out what the common threads are between my favorite bands, and then come up with a list of possibilities for my next disc! And even if it's a group or artist that's so far not made an appearance, I'll certainly take the suggestion seriously.

Alas, this contest has no prizes, I'm sorry to say! But just know that I'm open to any suggestions (within reason), and if I have any of the suggested songs I'll try to work them in somewhere on a future disc or two.

As far as Discs 41 and 42 are concerned, I've already pretty much got the track listing in my head, so any suggestions would probably be too late for those. But I'll be on the lookout for suggestions for later discs! smile
