I was REALLY scared when i was reading both The Shining and IT by King.  I read Shining when I was about 7 or 8 so that goes without saying.

I read the Shining for the first time in my second year on university and it still scared the shit out of me.  I tried reading a lot of King's novels when I was younger, but I never found them that scary.  I never finished Pet Semetary, It, or Misery and I am NOT one to not read a book through.  But the Shining was amazing.

Another one of King's novels that I thoroughly enjoyed was Gerald's Game.  I should read that one again soon...

Hey, it's garden....King's books are hard to read as a kid.  I went through a bunch of them as a kid but had to go through them again as an adult to really get some of the stuff.  IT remains one of the most frightening books I've read.

IT and Christine along with Shining are my all times favorites from King. But recently I enjoy Dark Tower a whole lot.

King, Lovercraft and Poe are the masters.

Not counting the movies screenwriters that is. Raimi is a genius.

The scariest book I've ever read was probably King's Tommyknockers back in high school.

The most disturbing book I've read had to be The Lucifer Effect by Philip Zimbardo. I'm a psychology student so the information outlined shouldn't have bugged me, but reading all about the different atrocities as well as experiments that showed just how cruel people can be to those they don't view as part of their group got to me.

Ever since becoming a parent I can't bring myself to read Pet Semetary again.

I read the Crossed......... until I read that book it was neonomicon and until that one it was the great and secret show.

Neonomicon was good, though it started out as just weird porn. (Heh. Fish dong)
Crossed was excellent, but the spin-offs (Family Values, etc) just seem like needlessly shocking. "What can we do that's just effed up? It doesn't need a reason, just be shocking.)
Meh.

This is the most disturbing book I have ever read, bar none, nothing else has come close.

One of the scariest books I ever read was The Birthing House, it legitimately scared the crap out of me.

Re: What was the scariest and/or most disturbing book you have ever read?

I'm ashamed to say that aside from the occasional revisit to an old favorite like Hell House or Stephen King's Dance Macabre, I haven't done a lot of horror reading in about, oh, twenty years or so.  I can go back ten years and count the number of horror books I've read on one hand.

I should do something about that...

Re: What was the scariest and/or most disturbing book you have ever read?

Misery, by King. I don't know if it's because I'm a writer or what, but that book creeps me out every time I read.

I have an old book full of Poe short stories and every single story sends chills through me. I literally get cold and feel things around me when I read those stories.

Hellbound Heart

but the most disturbing books ive ever read were because of the pictures...and those were the Alvin Schwarts horror story books....as a kid, those pictures freaked me the FUCK out....
