Topic: Things you hate in horror

I'm just curious, what are some things in horror films that you can't stand? They can range from characters, directors and plot devices you hate to things that make you cringe.

For me, it's definitely fingernail scenes. Excessive gore doesn't bother me, as decapitation, bisection, dismemberment, people getting blown up, crushed and dissolved by acid are all fine with me.

However, I cringe whenever someone gets a fingernail ripped off. For whatever reason, I just can't take it, I have to avert my gaze whenever such a scene comes up. They seem to be getting more and more common as well. I recall that Cabin Fever 2 (terrible movie btw) has a particularly nasty fingernail scene. Stir Of Echoes is another one. As much as I like that movie, I look at the floor during the scene where the girl gets one of her nails ripped off.

This might stem from the fact that I've had a fingernail ripped off before, and that fucking HURTS.

Re: Things you hate in horror

Not a big fan of extended rape scenes.

Re: Things you hate in horror

^^I'll second that one.

Re: Things you hate in horror

Mmmm, lemme think... Well nothing. lol

Re: Things you hate in horror

The recent trend of 'torture-porn' films. Gore ain't scary if there is nothing behind it. its just boring and forgettable.

Re: Things you hate in horror

Not to keen on anything to do with eyes or finger nails. the eye slicing scene in un chien andalou turned my stomach.

Re: Things you hate in horror

I wouldn't say hate persay.  Like the guys above me, extended rape is hard to watch and should never be gratuitous by any means.  Other than that, I'm a tad annoyed by movies that rely way too much on jump scares...so you turned up the soundtrack really loud and pliced in a scary shot...there's usually no substance...I guess anything that's overdone for no reason.

Re: Things you hate in horror

I hate bad acting in horror tongue

Re: Things you hate in horror

I hate people who come into a horror movie, whether fans or people making it, just for vanity.  It's not as common before but in the last 15 years we've seen lots of Hollywood people making horror films JUST for the payday and now because it seems the popular thing to do.  Horror is a fan's genre.  Made for and made by horror fanatics.  You can tell when a movie isn't made by a fan and it's just a spit in the face.

Re: Things you hate in horror

Any film that doesen't bring anything new to the table. And imagination does not mean new and diverse ways to kill a person. So a big "NO" to movies based only on torture.

Re: Things you hate in horror

Off screen kills.

Re: Things you hate in horror

When filmmakers assume the audience is stupid and don't bother having anything make sense.  This includes:

Plot holes -- yay, the  movies's over.  Wait a minute...how did they kill the killer with a shotgun when it showed him getting shot earlier and it didn't have an effect on him?

Stupid characters doing things that a fourth grader would know not to do -- Hey, we just found our friend sliced to ribbons in the middle of the woods.  Quick, let's split up and see if we can find who did it.

When the plot forces an intelligent character to do something that intelligent character would never do  -- Okay, Ripley, you've evaded the monster with your intelligence and resourcefulness, now all you have to do is close the hatch and you're free to go, the winner, the survivor!  But first, how's about you go back and get the cat?

And a dozen other examples I'd be here all night writing out.  The audience isn't stupid.  Don't treat us like we are.

Re: Things you hate in horror

I hate the way the horror genre gets the most crappy directors in film because horror movies can be easy to make.

And by crappy directors, I mean the guys who have never done anything and just think by putting some half baked plot about a killer in the woods and stupid teens wandering around it makes a good movie.

It doesn't, and you probably aren't a good director either.

Re: Things you hate in horror

^^^ Which in turn leads to another complaint I have, that horror is typically used as a starting-off point by directors who hope to go on to "better" things and then snub the genre they got their start in.

Re: Things you hate in horror

Over usage of CGI.

Re: Things you hate in horror

^That's a complaint of mine for all movies.

I agree with most of what Lon said, though I'm not always as concerned about a logical plot. I've watched enough Italian films to get used to unusual plotting (to say the least).

Agreed. It totally ruined, Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter.

Also, I don't like it in horror movies when the evil one is hit over the head and not killed, thus enabling him to get up and go on to slaughter everyone in the film.

THAT is soooooooooooo annoying.

Re: Things you hate in horror

I hate the over abundance of jump scares as well. If a movie has more than two or three jump scares, it's a very good indication that its a bad movie.

Speaking of bad movies, sometimes I'll watch a B slasher flick if I'm bored and want to kill some time.

I'm so tired of the white, probably virginal girl next door type ALWAYS being the sole survivor. Apparently in most slasher films if you're a guy, any race besides caucasian, not a virgin, homosexual, a recreational drug user, or even remotely interesting, you have a 0% chance of surviving the movie.

That's boring. I want to see a guy be the sole survivor for once, or at least a woman of another race.

Sure, there are a few horror movies where the only survivor is a man (like the original Evil Dead) but I can't think of more than one or two.

Re: Things you hate in horror

^^Good point...it's a cliche in the genre that has a lot of basis in fact.  I was genuinely surprised as to who survived the Evil Dead remake and who lasted as long as they did....not that I want to spoil it for anyone who hasn't yet seen it.

I think I watch more 80's B horror movies than recent/remakes/bigger movies. Same goes for rewatches.

Re: Things you hate in horror

@Dr. Sal(ly?)-
Here is a not very accurate list of final guys done by FearNet.  Some live, some are up in the air at the end, and some kick it before it's over.

Here is a list of movies were black people last to the end.

There are probably more, but I only looked so far.

Re: Things you hate in horror

Both lists are pretty thin and, in some cases, hardly worth mentionning.

But, yet again, I am amazed at how fast you're able to pull up the perfect answer.

Re: Things you hate in horror

I hate those fake dream scenes

Day of the Dead, I hate the opening arms coming from the wall

Halloween 2 remake,  One hell of long dream scenes!

Re: Things you hate in horror

I'm all for a nice sex scene but horror movies with too much nudity and sex, and yeah bad acting!

Just look at "The Conjuring", great horror movie with no nudity!

Re: Things you hate in horror

^^^
True.
But look at Countess Dracula great with a lot of naked scenes. smile

Re: Things you hate in horror

I hate emotionless, stale, underwritten characters in a horror movie. I like characters we care about and root for, and like just as much as the villain. I like a character we can relate to, not an underdeveloped one we're introduced to only to have killed off.
