Topic: Spanish Horror

I'm looking for some good Spanish language horror recommendations. I've seen the obvious ones, Rec 1 & 2, The Orphanage, Julia's Eyes, Cronos, The Devil's Backbone, The Silent House, and a few others.

I'm looking for the next round, the ones that aren't as well known. Anybody have any ideas?

Re: Spanish Horror

What about Tesis. Decent movie

Re: Spanish Horror

Atrocious was worth a watch. I can't think of any others off the top of my head.

Re: Spanish Horror

Atrocious.. it's not amazing but it's ok. Can't think of any more spanish that you haven't already named! Pans Labyrinth is good, infact I haven't been able to watch past the part with the thing with eyes in its hands! Get nightmares everytime haha. (wimp!) You seem to like Del Toro so I think this will be up your street.

Ms Gorefiend beat me to it haha.

Re: Spanish Horror

Check out Jess Franco's films for some old school Spanish horror or Isle Of The Damned by Narciso Ibanez Serrador. I especially recommend the latter. In fact id say Who Can Kill A Child and Devils Backbone are my two favourite Spanish flicks.

Re: Spanish Horror

I've seen Pan's Labyrinth, it's a great film but I see it as more of a fantasy/drama rather than horror, which is why I didn't name it above.

Will have to check out Tesis and Atrocious.

I had to look up Isle of the Damned, I've actually seen it, but I knew it by its original title, Who Can Kill a Child? I really liked it! Going into research mode now for Jess Franco's films. smile

Yeah, I'm looking for movies that are originally in Spanish really.

Of these, I've seen Timecrimes and The Uninvited Guest - really like both of these - and We Are What We Are, which I thought was just ok. I have Sleep Tight on Blu Ray as well, haven't watched it yet though.

Have you seen all of these? I've heard The Baby's Room is really good, haven't been able to get hold of it yet though.

Yup, these are the ones that I have watched in the last year or so that came to mind first.  There are more, but I will have to dig through the old memory bank to recall them.  The Baby's Room was my favorite entry from the 6 Films to keep you awake series.  Definitely check out Sleep Tight, Cold Sweat and Penumbra, all well worth watching.  Also I just remembered The Squad (2012) which is from Columbia and is pretty good, and The Dark Hour which was just okay.

Re: Spanish Horror

Hi!!

I made this list on IMDB of the best spanish horror movies i've seen, and i've seen quite many, so here is my recomendation.

http://www.imdb.com/list/zgWh-dwQnf4/

The list is a mix of spanish horror movies, but also co-productions (with spanish money)

Right away, i would strongly recommend "Secuestrados (Kidnapped)" , "The Abandoned", "To let", and "The Last Circus". "Sexykiller" is superfunny too.

On the list i would say that up to #19 movies are good. From #20 and on, movies are not amazing, but still worth watching.

Enjoy!

Re: Spanish Horror

I'm from Spain so I've seen a lot of Spanish movies hehe.

Someone told you Who can kill a child? That's right, the film is absolutely awesome. The same director, Ibañez Serrador, made The house that screamed, amazing and one of my favourites.

Another good one is Day of the beast, directed by Alex de la Iglesia. I think you'll like it.

A recent one is The body, it's more like a thriller but there are some horror elements.

And if you want to have a really bad time, try to watch La cabina by Antonio Mercero. It's a 30 min. short but it's very popular in my country and everyboy was shocked 40 years ago when it was broadcasted.

There are more movies but the best ones have been listed by the rest of the people here.

Re: Spanish Horror

I looked up La Cabina on IMDB after reading you post. And it seems it scared the bejeesus out of a bunch of brits in the 80's when it was broadcast on BBC with subtitles. So I gave it a gander one youtube. What a fantastic short it was. It's amazing what the lead is able to convey with facial expressions and movements alone. I love the scene with the mimes, it's exactly what he is doing the whole time. It starts out lighthearted but builds in dread as the short progresses. Good ending too.

Re: Spanish Horror

I'm glad you liked it.

I can think of a good TV series very similar to Tales from the Crypt and The Twilight Zone made in Spain. It was called Historias para no dormir. If I find some episodes with English subtitles, I'll post it.

Re: Spanish Horror

Yeah man, that would be great! I always love finding the old obscure stuff.

Re: Spanish Horror

Oh when I was in Madrid I came across Historias Para No Dormir and it's a total blast. Some great Horror comes from Spain really. Not so known in America but still very nice stuff to search for. Reminds me a bit of Italia as far as style goes but it stands alone.

Re: Spanish Horror

have you seen bajo la sal or la santa muerte... bajo la sal i think is a wonderful movie it has a great twist to it. la santa muerte is not that great but it does talk about what i think is one of the topic horror movies haven touched yet.

Re: Spanish Horror

Never seen Bajo La Sal but La Santa Muerte I truely LOVE it.

Another great one is Los Ojos Azules de la Muneca Rota, Eva Leon is fantastic in it. smile

Re: Spanish Horror

anybody seen Tuno Negro aka Black Serenade - brilliant and underrated
a Spanish slasher with nods to Argento esp Suspiria in one scene
Brian Yuzna's Faust - Love Of The Damed
Fausto 2.0
can't remember the title but Paul Naschy is in it as an ex actor who resorts to killing
School Killer - Paul Naschy again
