You Voted: 15 Best New Horror Movies

Recently we asked our readers to vote on their favorite horror movies but we specifically limited the choices to only new horror movies. My specific guideline for our readers was to list your favorite films from the last 5 years only. The resulting votes were quite diverse but as usual its hard to dispute the quality of the list.

Although I would have replaced a few of the titles on the list overall its a solid representation of new horror movies that are worth watching.

So without further ado here are the 15 Best New Horror Movies based off the votes of our readers.

#15: Fright Night Remake

As genre fans we love to hate on remakes and for the most part we have every right to. I can point to a whole whack of remakes which are just outright horrendous including a whole slew of low rent Night of the Living Dead remakes. When plans for a Fright Night remake were announced I was not even remotely interested but I have to concede the final product was pretty solid.

You all voted it #15 on our list of the best new horror films.

#14: Behind the Mask The Rise of Leslie Vernon

Behind The Mask is an absolutely outstanding faux documentary about an up and coming killer who gives a documentary crew access to his day-to-day life as he goes from relative unknown to the next great iconic killer. Behind The Mask is an outstanding film that true horror genre fans will relate to.

#13: Tucker & Dale Vs Evil

Tucker & Dale Vs Evil is one of the funniest horror comedies ever made. Tucker & Dale are on vacation at their dilapidated mountain cabin when they are attacked by a group of preppy college kids who mistake them as deranged killers. It pokes fun at various stereotypes in the genre and is a brutal and entertaining film.

#12: V/H/S

V/H/S is an anthology film and our readers seem to love it or hate it but this go around it was voted to the #12 place. V/H/S is the story of a group of misfits hired by an unknown third-party to burglarize a desolate house and acquire a rare VHS tape, they discover more found footage than they bargained for.

#11: Stakeland

Starring Danielle Harris Stakeland is in my humble opinion not only of the best new horror movies but is also one of the Top 10 vampire films of all time. Stakeland is the story of a teenage boy named Martin who finds himself caught up in a vampiric apocalyse. His parents are murdered, his baby sister literally eaten alive and he finds himself teaming up with a vampire hunter named Mister.

Together they hit the road looking for the last safe oasis in a world turned upside down by vampires. A brutal and truly powerful film Stakeland does for vampires what Walking Dead did for zombies!

Stakeland is and outstanding source material that is begging to be turned into a series on AMC!

#10: I Saw The Devil

I Saw The Devil is the story of a serial killer who is hunting down, murdering and mutilating his victims but soon makes a very big mistake when he kills the fiance of a government agent. The well-trained agent seeks revenge and turns the tables on the serial killer as he faces his greatest adversary. I Saw The Devil is a truly outstanding film as the hero becomes the villain and we all see the devil inside.

#9: American Mary

I think American Mary had way to much hype around it but there is no denying it was a fun film that had some really great qualities. Clearly our readers loved it since it lands on our list at #9 beating out some really great films. American Mary follows medical student, Mary Mason, as she becomes increasingly broke and disenchanted with the surgical world she once admired.

#8 Trick Or Treat

When it comes to horror anthologies Trick or Treat is one of the best of all time. Trick R Treat is four interwoven stories that occur on Halloween: An everyday high school principal has a secret life as a serial killer; a college virgin might have just met the one guy for her; a group of teenagers pull a mean prank; a woman who loathes the night has to contend with her holiday-obsessed husband.

Trick R Treat is a movie that every genre fan should see!

#7: Let The Right One In

Let The Right One In much like StakeLand is one of the greatest vampire films ever made. It is a powerful experience and turns the traditional teen first love story on its ear.

In Let The Right One In Oskar, an overlooked and bullied boy, finds love and revenge through Eli, a beautiful but peculiar girl who turns out to be a vampire. It was remade by Matt Reeves and that remake overall was a very solid experience but nothing touches the original. If you love Vampire films you must see Let The Right One In.

#6: Sinister

I am a big fan of Ethan Hawke’s but I passed on Sinister so I have no personal comments on it. You all voted it #6 on the list of best new horror movies. In Sinister a true-crime writer finds a cache of 8mm home movies films that suggest the murder he is currently researching is the work of a serial killer whose career dates back to the 1960s.

#5: Martyrs

Pascal Laugier’s Martyrs is the movie that would have been #1 on this list if it was my list. In Martyr’s A young woman’s quest for revenge against the people who kidnapped and tormented her as a child leads her and a friend, who is also a victim of child abuse, on a terrifying journey into a living hell of depravity.

Martyr’s is one of the few new horror movies that left me truly shocked. A powerful and amazing film that will leave your soul haunted.

#4: Hatchet

Hatchet is a tribute to good old American Horror and is a fun romp in the swamp featuring some genre favorites and the typical ‘monster in the woods’ angle. I actually prefer Adam Green’s SPIRAL but there is no denying that HATCHET was a huge hit with horror fans and should be on any Best New Horror Films list.

#3: Insidious

James Wan’s Insidious was polarizing with our readers. You either loved it to death or you hated it. I do not remember seeing any of our readers saying ‘it was ok’. I for one thought it was a fun film that was a great homage to classic supernatural films like Amityville Horror. In Insidious a family looks to prevent evil spirits from trapping their comatose child in a realm called The Further.

#2: Evil Dead

When they first announced the Evil Dead remake ( ok prequel ) I was beside myself. How dare they remake one of the greatest horror films of all time and no Bruce Campbell as Ash? Sacrilege! I was forced to eat my disdain when I saw the film in theaters and had to admit that although it was not as good as the original the Evil Dead prequel/remake was a really polished horror film.

#1: Cabin in the Woods

Cabin in the Woods is easily one of the most discussed film on our site and similar to Insidious you either loved it or hated it. Evil Dead and Cabin in the Woods were nearly a dead tie with only two votes separating them. I really enjoyed Cabin in the Woods and think it is one of the best and most original new horror movies.

A group of college students head out to a cabin in the woods for some down time and soon find themselves caught at the center of the events that will lead to the end of the world!
