Awaken the Dead
In Theatre : Unknown Director(s): Jeff Brookshire Christopher is a priest who moves through life like a zombie, haunted by a past he cannot forget and clinging desperately to his deeply rooted religious beliefs. In his past, he served as an assassin for the government. The death of innocents weighs heavily on him. Then, one day he wakes to find a red envelope in his room. A calling card from his former mentor in the government that he cannot ignore but dearly wishes he could. It instructs him to go to a house and wait. Enter Mary. She lives in the house. She's had a tough life, retreats from the world and lives in isolation. She also receives a red envelope from the father she fears but dares not disobey. It instructs her not to leave the house until he arrives. When Christopher enters the house, fireworks erupt. Mary attacks him, thinking he's a burglar. He retreats calmly, a man of peace, and explains himself. Against their will, they are thrown together, waiting for a man they both dread and fear. Neither one is happy about the arrangement but they wait none-the-less. Strange events start to unfold. Christopher's car develops four flat tires. A strange watcher is observing the house. A silent canister is dropped from a helicopter, releasing a virus into the air. Two Jehovah's Witnesses canvas the neighborhood but Christopher sends them off politely. People start disappearing. Mary's former boyfriend storms the house to get her back and the confrontation gets ugly. Mary chases him off and is upset that Christopher stands by passively. She doesn't understand why he refuses to confront people and thinks he's just a coward hiding behind pacifism. At the end of a stressful day, they sleep. Christopher is haunted by nightmares from his past while Mary wakes to strange noises outside her window. She parts the blinds to find dozens of the living dead outside her window. They attack. Some get in through an open window and the madness begins. Mary defends herself, unaware that Christopher is struggling to shut a window elsewhere. Again, she thinks he's a coward. And so it builds. Along the way, they take in other survivors, including one of the Jehovah's Witnesses from earlier, Stanley. Between the danger, a relationship develops between Christopher and Mary and they begin to question why they are there. They unravel clues about the government's involvement as the danger increases. And, when Christopher finally does snap, his fury and skills amaze the others. Christopher, Mary and the other survivors realize that they must face their greatest fears, rely on each other, and do the unthinkable, venture outside. In a trek that takes them across a desolate landscape, they head for a rendezvous with Mary's father and the secrets that will set them free.
