Dying Breed
In Theatre : Unknown Director(s): Jody Dwyer An extinct species... a long forgotten legend... four friends on the quest of a lifetime... who find themselves isolated but not alone in an unforgiving wilderness! Dying Breed is a modern day story of cannibalism inspired by the bizarre and true story of Alexander Pearce - a convict who lived in the early 19th century. The legend of Alexander Pearce, or 'The Pieman' as he became known, is one of the most macabre in Australia's colonial heritage. Pearce, along with a group of seven other convicts, escaped the penal settlement of Sarah Island on the rugged South West coast of Tasmania and disappeared into the impenetrable forests surrounding what is now the world heritage listed Franklin and Gordon Rivers. Eight escaped into the wilderness, yet Pearce was the only one who emerged. Initially, his captors didn't believe Pearce when he claimed that he had eaten the other escapees. The troopers believed he was just covering for his mates. But then they found chunks of human flesh in his pockets. Hence, the legend of Pearce was born - and now endures... with even a river named after him... The Pieman River. Dying Breed is a story of how a group of four, on a quest to find the long- thought extinct Thylacine (or Tasmanian Tiger) find themselves unknowingly trapped in the domain of the descendants of Pearce - some of whom still share their patriarch's appetite for human flesh! The countryside is dotted with abandoned zinc and copper mines, so it's not unusual for foolhardy people to periodically disappear - and there have been plenty over the years. It is NOT an area for the inexperienced hiker. Led by Nina, the four travelled to Tasmania to try and find the Thylacine, allegedly seen from time to time in remote and isolated areas around Tasmania - most recently near the township of Sarah. Along with Nina's boyfriend Matt and two other friends (Jodie and Jack), the four equip themselves and travel into an area where a Thylacine was reportedly spotted. Nina is determined to prove the Thylacine is alive, and is driven by the haunting memory of her sister who disappeared years before while she searched for the Tiger. As their quest begins, the four become the hunted, as the living descendant of Pearce pursues them. He lives as a wild man, in the wilderness like his forefathers - coming near civilization only to feast on the occasional unfortunates who wander into his domain. Who will live? Who will die? Is there only one Pearce descendant? How has this secret been hidden for so long?
