Burton to Re-do Frankenweenie
As Sweeney Todd draws near, Tim Burton has begun to talk about his next project. It appears as though up next is a full-lenght version of his short film Frankenweenie. In a SCI-FI Wire Interview Burton talks about production soon beginning on redoing this 1984 short film. However instead of live action, it is going to be a stop-motion animated film like Burton excels at and will receive a 3-D release in theaters. Production is set to begin soon and Burton had this to say about the new version of Frankenweenie:
"We're going to do that real low-budget. The thing that excites me about it and that will make it different is that when I look at my original drawings, there are certain things that are in those that I couldn't get in the live action when I made the film. So I'm quite excited to try to get a certain emotion and other characters in the new version, and I want to make it a slightly bigger story."
I have seen the uncensored version on The Nightmare Before Christmas DVD and I must say I think it is enjoyable. I think it is going to be interesting to see what he expands upon by making this full lenght and if it will keep a dark edge to it. Remember, Frankenweenie is the film that got Burton fired from Disney for making because they felt he was "wasting" resources and that it was too scary for their family oriented audience. Now remaking it without Disney getting in the way and with having a bigger budget and more story ideas, Frankenweenie could be a very twisted Burton film. Expect Frankenweenie in theaters no earlier than 2009.
When young Victor's pet dog Sparky (who stars in Victor's home-made monster movies) is hit by a car, Victor decides to bring him back to life the only way he knows how. But when the bolt-necked "monster" wreaks havoc and terror in the hearts of Victor's neighbors, he has to convince them (and his parents) that despite his appearance, Sparky's still the good loyal friend he's always been
For those who have never seen the original Frankenweenie short film, it can be found in three parts on Youtube. Part 1, Part 2, Part 3
