Low Budget Cashins on Big Budget Horror

There is a whole new niche of horror movies being made. My new friend Mark at About.com has written a detailed piece which focuses on MockBusters. A Mockbuster is where a studio takes a film idea and knocks it off. A great example is MONSTER which is a knock off of Cloverfield. Or at least thats what it looks like. Good? Bad? You decide. For me a 'mock'buster as Mark calls it is not a bad thing. Sure it might be blatant cashing in on a big franchise film with a similar name but if its a good film.... is it any worse then a tired direct to dvd sequel?

Asylum is the main company that comes to mind. They have done alot of mockbuster films including MONSTER which you can watch the trailer for below, as well as AVH: Alien vs. Hunter, Exorcism: The Possession of Gail Bowers and so on. To get an idea of the quality watch the trailer for MONSTER the CloverField knock off below.
