Whats the Hold Up On Red State?

It has been a couple weeks since we have heard anything from Kevin Smith on his upcoming horror flick. If you forgot all about it the idea was to focus on the Westboro Baptist Church in Topeka, Kansas. The Phelps family make up most of the churchs followers and is run by preacher Fred Phelps. The family is widely known for spreading their homophobic and hatred of the U.S. Army all over. They have made several appearences on television mainly on Fox News and even the Tyra Banks show. Well Kevin Smith is planning a little film influenced by them called "Red State".

Finally today STYD has learned that not only the filming of his latest film Zack and Miri Make A Porno been preventing the shooting, "We're still looking for some cash for it 'cause it's not a really commercial film at all. It's very bleak and very dark, and there's no one to root for in the movie, so it's a real film festival type of film, but it's not the kind of movie you can take into multiplexes and do a bunch of business with unless it becomes a water cooler type of movie where people start talking about it. So we've had trouble finding financing for it, but hopefully that'll come together soon. Script's all done. We want to make it for like $5 million in the Midwest and do it with a bunch of unknowns and see what happens."

Obviously Kevin Smith taking a very different approach to his regular filmmaking genre is something many people are not interested in. Last time that happened he directed Jersey Girl which most people know.. bombed. I love film festival type movies because they reflect real society much better than what glossy Hollywood pictures do. I have high hopes for this film and I am guessing that with Kevin Smith attached he will find his funding somewhere.
