Layoffs Begin for Weinstein Company

We have had plenty of discussions on how the current economy could change things in the horror world.  While affecting Hollywood in general and not just the horror community, it appears that the Weinstein Co. is feeling the effects of the economic crisis.  Variety reports that Weinstein Co. layed off 11% of their staff today, trimming from 224 employees to an even 200.  The cuts affected all departments in offices in Gotham, L.A., the U.K. and Hong Kong.

TWC has been through a lot of rocky times with both it's mainstream and horror movies as of late.  Less than stellar box office numbers, lower DVD sales, and detachment from MGM have really put the company through rocky times.  We have seen a result of some of those troubles here as horror fans with splitting the film Grindhouse into two seperate DVD's to try and turn a little more profit, and a large crop of movies under their Dimension Extreme going straight-to-DVD.

Only time will tell how much these layoffs will have an effect on TWC, but being a smaller indie company that at least has tried to focus on horror with it's Dimension Extreme lablel, it would be a shame if these problems continue and lead to bigger layoffs/closures.
