The Weekend The Earth Paused
The remake of the 1951 classic The Day The Earth Stood Still opened number one at the box office. Boxofficemojo got the tally and despite a load of fair-to-negative reviews TDTESS raked in an estimated $31million over the opening weekend. With an estimated budget in the $80million range, its an okay start. Question is though will the film have legs or will negative word of mouth kill it?TDTSS knocked two week champion Four Christmases down to second place, the holiday comedy raked in another $13million, still going strong. Meanwhile tween vampire film Twilight dropped to third place with about $8million dollars, bringing the gross up to the $150million mark.
Sound off on the boards on how you feel about the sci-fi remake. I plan to catch it myself tomorrow, but what I've heard has ranged from "complete crap" to "meh". So bad word of mouth might hurt its chances at doing well. But there is a trailer for X-Men Origins: Wolverine before the film...but that appears online sometime Monday. The Day The Earth Stood Still was directed by Scott Derrickson (Hellrasier: Inferno, Exorcism of Emily Rose) and stars Keanu Reeves and Jennifer Connelly.
