Jason Falls, Big Time
Last week the uber-fan polarizing Friday the 13th reboot topped number one at the domestic box office with just over $40million. Genre films don't tend to have the 'legs' for a long run at the box office, a hopeful big opener followed by two weeks of steady droppage before disappearing. By the box office estimates at Box Office Mojo however, I highly doubt F13 will last long in theaters. From $40.5million opening, the film fell like like nobody's business to number 6 with about $7.8million. What makes this drop in someways funny is that films like Taken, Coraline, He's Just Not That Into You and of course Oscar Nominee Slumdog Millionaire climbed over F13 to grab spots 2-5 respectfully. Tyler Perry's Madea Goes To Jail got top spot raking in $41.1million, which shouldn't be a big surprise. The other new release Fired Up just hit number 9 with $6million.
The first two months of the year has had some decent openers for genre films. Underworld: Rise of the Lycans is at 20 with $750,000 (domestic total of $45million and worldwide gross $67.1million). And with Coraline hogging most of the 3D screens, My Bloody Valentine has dropped 28 with $380,000 (total domestic, a respectful $51.2million, worldwide $62.5million).
I can probably see Friday the 13th disappearing completey from the top next next week and probably be outta most theaters by middle or tail end of March. The next genre films to hit the screen with be Horsemen in limited release on March 6 and The Last House on the Left on March 13.
