Drag Me To Hell Debuts at #3
Sam Raimi's return to horror with Drag Me to Hell had a tough task on it's hand: compete against early summer blockbusters and family films at the box office. The task at hand was tough but Drag Me to Hell was able to come in at #3 in its debut weekend. BoxOfficeMojo reports that DMTH came in behind new Pixar release Up and another family film, Night at the Museum 2.
DMTH pulled in an estimated $16.62 million over it's first weekend, which was almost $9 million behind Night at the Muesuem for #2 and was only a half million more than Terminator Salvation earned at #4. DMTH was only playing on 2,508 screens which was almost a thousand screens less than any other film in the top six. Despite coming in third, its smaller theater count actually made it #2 behind up for Average made per theater.
I am not quite sure the budget but $16.62 million is an alright haul considering what it was up against. It will be interesting to see if Drag Me to Hell can keep box office "legs"and do well for a few more weeks or if it will disappear quickly and quietly. Critics have been very kind to the film but Horror fans are a little split. The film is currently averaging a 64.2% approval rating on our site based on 7 reviews and 126 quick votes.
