Bioshock 2 Delayed until 2010

In a move that saddens me yet at the same time excites me is one that I didnt see coming.  I was a huge fan of the action/horror shooter Bioshock and have been eagerly awaiting the sequel.  With a release date of November 3rd on the horizon, Bioshock 2 was getting closer but now it appears the wait will be much further.

Take-Two Interactive, who owns 2K Games, announced today that the game would be pushed back to the "first half of calender year 2010".  First half? Ouch.  That could mean anything from January to June which is a big bump back from the November release date.  However, the good news is they are pushing it back because it sounds like the project would not be fully polished by November and they didnt want to rush it.  Take-Two CEO Ben Fedor had this to say about the delay:

The decision to shift a release date is never an easy one, especially with a product as highly anticipated as BioShock 2. We felt that it was essential to invest the additional time to ensure that this title will deliver what its fans expect and deserve.

Strauss Zelnick, Chairman for Take-Two, also added some words about the release change:

We concluded that moving the release of BioShock 2 into fiscal year 2010 was the right decision for the product. We believe the result will be a more compelling consumer experience and a better performing product in the marketplace.

So at least the game is being delayed because they are trying to make sure it lives up the high expectations after the first Bioshock became an instant hit and Game of the Year award winner.  Truely, the delay does suck for us fans eagerly awaiting the release but I would rather have them push back the release to polish up the game then rush it just to get it out before Christmas.

At least with games like Left 4 Dead 2 and Dead Rising 2 on the horizon this year there will still be a chance to get you're horror gaming fix on, but just not in the lost underworld city of Rapture.  More details on the official release date when they become available!
