District 9 Rules Theaters

Lauded by both fans and more 'mainstream' critics alike, Neill Blomkamp's District 9 has opened to number one at the Box Office.  BoxOfficeMojo has studio estimates putting the sci-fi movie at a strong $37million dollars.  With an R rating and some people questioning its story and overall quality from the trailers, the film has opened well.  With a budget of around $30million, there's no place to go but up for D9.  Final results will be released Monday so it might flucuated by a few thousand dollars, but even so its a good showing.

Factoring in the reviews from our sister site MoviesOnline.ca the film holds a 67% score on our meter, so its dropped somewhat since the first few reviews.  Even so, it's a must see and reviews have been more positive than negative.  I think a strong word of mouth will keep District 9 chugging along, to a very healthy gross.  I can imagine after this weekend Blomkamp has his pick of projects and "From The Director of District 9" will be put onto posters and trailers for his future films.

But for now, I plan to see it again before it leaves theaters and I look forward to the DVD release, hopefully there'll be tasty featurettes and commentaries on the disc.  Coming into theaters next for genre fans is going to be a tough choice on August 28 when Halloween II and The Final Destination (in 3D) hits screens.
