District 9 Gets Scalped by Basterds

Decided on doing a followup Box Office Report on how District 9 has held up against the threat of Quentin Tarantino and his Basterds.  According to BoxOfficeMojo D9 fell to second place with $18.9million as Tarantino and his Nazi scalpers raked in a heavy $37.6million.  So far District 9 has grossed $73.4million domestic and about $7.6millin overseas for a total of $81.1million.  Keep in mind, D9 hasn't been released in all territories as of yet, so its foreign take is likely to climb.

Dropping from a $37.3million opening weekend, it was a heavy drop, however it could have been steeper.  District 9 weathered Brad Pitt, but how will it stand up to Death and Michael Meyer's come this friday?  More than likely, I think Rob Zombie's Halloween II will probably open at number one with around $30-35million; the first opened at $26.3million (not including the money made on Labor Day) and considering how well this August has been, I don't think it's outside the realm of possibility.  The Final Destination will probably open with less as it will be released almost completely to 3D screens, but basing how My Bloody Valentine 3D did, it may get around $20million, though with H2, it could be less.  Then again, this weekend is perfect for a double horror feature.  We'll all find out what comes out on top this Sunday, Michael Meyers....or Death.  Both Halloween II and The Final Destination 3D come out this Friday, August 28.
