Paranormal Activity Breaks a Box Office Record
While thegoldensimatar informed us that Paranormal Activity landed at #5 on this weekends Box Office Charts, it appears all the hype about Paranormal Activity being the "scariest movie of all time" has raised enough eye-brows to make the film a record breaking hit. The film opened to slightly higher audiences this weekend playing in a whopping 160 theaters nationwide. Despite the low theater count, the film scared up enough viewers to make $7.1 million this weekend and land it at #5 in the weekend box office charts.
So you may be seeing the title and asking yourself, "How is $7.1 million a box office record?" and the answer is simple. That is the highest weekend gross ever for a film released in under 200 theaters. It is a record that has been held for 22 years by Platoon, which made $3.7 million in 176 theaters. So not only did it break a record, it nearly doubled it.
What is even more impressive is the math on it's $7.1 million in 160 theaters. That comes out to a per-theater average of $44,163. Compare that to the #1 movie, Couple's Retreat, which had a $11,780 per theater average. Thats just shy of earning 4 times more per theater than the top grossing movie of the weekend. And if you wanna see how impressive that number is, The Dark Night's record breaking opening weekend had a per-theater average of $36,283 which is $8,000 less than Paranormal Activity. Damn!
After a haul like this in 160 theaters, you can bet that Paramount will release much much wider in the next week or two so everyone can find out. It's hard to say if it will go down as the "scariest movie of all time" but one thing is for sure: audiences are lining up to find out. Paranormal Activity is currently averaging an 80% here on HM based on 3 reviews. If you were lucky enough to see it in a theater near you write a review and tell us what you think.
