No District 9 Sequel In Near Future

One thing I'm conflicted over is a sequel to District 9, I think the original film works on its own and doesn't need a sequel, or even a prequel.  At the same time, there's so much of a universe I almost want another film to further explore that world.  Neill Blomkamp has expressed interest in returning to the alien refugee camps, however it won't be the next film on the South African's plate.

According to Variety, Media Rights Capital has agreed to produce Blomkamp's new science fiction film, which is due to start production in 2010.  And apparently MRC is giving Blomkamp a high degree of creative control:

"MRC is letting me make the film I want to make and that is by far the most important thing here...the film will hopefully be commercial, but it is very much a singular film that comes straight from's absolutely another science fiction film, quite idfferent from 'District 9', but some of the blending of genres and the tone might be within the same realm."

So folks waiting for a D9 sequel will have to wait a few years.  While Blomkamp has been busy with this new science fiction film, his leading man Sharlto Copley is currently filming The A Team playing "Howling Mad" Murdoch.  With Blomkamp's new film starting production in 2010, I think the earliest we could see a District 9 sequel (which will certainly be more publized than the original) is around 2012-13.
