New Moon Fandango's #1 Pre-Sell of all Time
Despite initial fan uproar over Catherine Hardwicke's departure and fear that Robert Pattinson won't be featured for more than ten minutes in the sequel, I guess this news proves that hordes of screaming fangirls are happy with bare chested werewolves. Fandango has come out and said that The Twilight Saga: New Moon now holds the title of the number one film in pre-sell.However, no official numbers are released, but it could be pretty damn sizable. Interlocking the reels (basically running one reel through multiple projectors) can add more midnight shows and I'm pretty sure many theater owners are going to be calling for added shows as the week goes on. Wouldn't at all be shocked if some theaters try to show New Moon on a constant loop starting Midnight Friday through Sunday evening to sate demand.
So, will New Moon defeat Twilight's $69million opening? Right now I'm going for a healthy yes, maybe closer to $80million or so, I don't think it'll crack the magic $100million. The franchise lacks appeal beyond its fanbase (both rabid and casual) to attract a varied audience in its opening weekend or later weekends.
However, I do think $100million opening isn't to much out of reach for the third and possibly fourth installment to the franchise, if this opening is big. The Twilight Saga New Moon will have midnight shows on November 20 but before that Twilight will show at multiple locations at 9pm on November 19. Though I do recommend skipping that, I will bet easy money people will be lining up as early as that for New Moon.
