New Moon Fails To Defeat Batman

Despite a huge $72million opening day, The Twilight Saga: New Moon failed to beat the $158.4million opening set by The Dark Knight last year.  According to BoxOfficeMojo, New Moon raked in an estimated $140.7million dollars in its first 3 days!  Final results will be released on Monday however the number (unadjusted) puts it at number three in largest openings, behind Knight and Spiderman 3 (which did about $151million).

I can say that the opening gross is about double what I had predicted it would do, won't be doubting the tween power along with the older female demographic for this franchise again.  The film has also made another $118million in overseas territories bringing its worldwide total to $258.7million.  With a budget of about $50million, its very much in the black.

However, the massive success is a double edged sword.  While opening day with $72million, it dropped massively to $43million on Saturday and then to $24million today.  The first film experienced a similar sort of drop off between Friday and Sunday.  And I bet like the first film, it'll have a big drop second week and continue to fall like a brick after that.

Still, its a huge success for Summit and I think the third film Eclipse looking at these numbers could open equally as strong and maybe a bit more.  Though no official news about the fourth book Breaking Dawn as a film has come out, I'm pretty sure that will be getting the fast track into production to keep up the momentum.  At the moment, Twilight: New Moon holds a 81.67% on our site.
