Move over Guys, Ladies Are Horror Fans To!Meh
When you look at the horror genre alot of mainstream press paint it with a very dark and not very flattering perspective. Many feel the genre is dominated by men who are into torture porn, gore and carnage and lack any sense of good taste. Unfortunately - or fortunately, that fact is not even remotely true if you look at our community and its statistics. I would have figured that 70-80% of our community members would be male but perhaps that is my own shallow thinking when it comes to our genre and its appeal. Some of our most active members and voices are definitely female and I am sure you regulars can name at least 5 without thinking too hard. But did you know that almost 50% of our active readers are in fact female?
Our most active fans in our community based off our facebook community stats are actually 48% female and of that 70% are between the age of 25 and 44. So when you consider that our genre is regularly looked at as a male dominated cesspool of violence and depravity it’s quite clear that it is simply not true.
I am not a female fan so I cannot say what draws women to the genre but I am sure they are similar things that draw me to the genre. I don't consider myself a perverted and demented male fan anymore then a female would. I like the thrills and the highs that come from watching a truly scary and disturbing horror film like MARTYRS or Dead Girl but I equally enjoy the laughs of great horror comedies like My Name Is Bruce and Shaun of the Dead and the thrills that come from watching films like SPIRAL, Misery or American Psycho! What makes this genre so great from my male perspective is how much it offers for so many different people. I don’t like gore for the sake of gore but I can appreciate it when its played out right and contributes to the overall effect of a horror film.
From thrills to kills and action and suspense the horror genre is truly where it is at as far as I am concerned and despite the misconception the dudes do not dominate the genre as fans.. we are on equal footing with our ‘better halves’ the ladies... and as somebody who enjoys the female point of view I think our community is all the better for it.
If you are one of our female readers ( especially those of you who read but don’t comment ) I would love to hear what you love about the genre and what draws you to horror films. What films keep you interested and what elements of the genre keeps you coming back?
Quick Editorial Note: Its worth noting that in calculating these stats we did not take into account how handsome I am and that may have swayed the results by attracting many of our female readers (*** Stop Snickering :) ***)
