Chris Weitz on Twilight: Breaking Dawn
Around the time Twilight: New Moon hit theaters back in November, there were two questions floating around online. First, how will Summit adapt the leviathan 756page fourth chapter in the series Breaking Dawn; options were to do a lot of cutting and make one long film or make two separate films. Second, would Moon's helmer Chris Weitz return to direct the finale to the series or would Summit stick with Eclipse's David Slade or find someone else to direct? With New Moon hitting DVD later this month, Weitz spoke to MTV about his thoughts and feelings for the series. About Breaking Dawn being split: "I think it makes sense for it to be split into two parts, because it's quite a dense book with a lot going on."
However, for his return to the series, it seems a bit unlikely because of family commitments. "...I have a two-and-a-half year old son, and each one of these movies - especially because it'd be such a long shoot as 'Breaking Dawn' - it kind of brings me to the edge of my physical and mental endurance...I just don't think I have it in me, and I think it's appropriate that someone else go ahead and do it."
Long shoot it certainly would be even if Summit decided just to make one three hour long final film. But Weitz also shared his feelings about 3D. The success of Avatar and other 3D films, had every studio accountant with the thought of '3D makes more money'. Some films that have already wrapped or close to wrap (such as Clash of the Titans or Harry Potter 7) will be going under a digital retrograde for 3D.
Weitz said: "I think that 3D is great so long as it's not used in a gimmicky fashion and it can supply extraordinary depth to the visual experience...it's great because it brings people to the theater, and filmmakers always want people to see things in the largest format possible."
He has a great mindset on what 3D should be used for, but money does talk for many studios. So, could we potentially see Twilight: Breaking Dawn 3D? I think it'd be silly to discount the potential of the series going 3D for the final part. But as of this time, Summit is staying fairly mute on the matter of the fourth entry, pretty sure fans won't be hearing much till Eclipse hits screens come June. Twilight: New Moon will hit DVD and Blu-Ray on March 20.
