David R. Ellis Directing War Monkeys?

Last time we heard about War Monkeys was that kung fu legend Sammo Hung was is in talks to star. A film that is in production at Dark Horse Films that at the time had director Kevin Munroe (TMNT, Dead of Night) attached. Today however comes news that David R. Ellis is in talks. He has quite a bit of experience with blending horror and comedy in Snakes On A Plane and Final Destination 2.

The horror comedy follows two janitors who, during a Christmas holiday, get trapped in an underground research facility after accidentally unleashing military-trained Rhesus monkeys. Sammo Hung was cast to play one of the janitors who battles the rabid simians.

What makes this project even more interesting is that they plan on using a combination of real monkeys, animatronics and CGI. Personally I think that is the absolute best thing to do. All CGI would look horrorible. Sometimes there are things that you just can't do with real monkeys or animatronics. So the blend of the three should be great. Currently they are eyeing a release in 2011.
