The Ultimate Horror Icon Oz’s Wicked Witch of the West

I love the conversations that I have with people who read our site. I also enjoy interacting with you all on twitter, facebook and our own forums. I don’t know if its normal but I enjoy the ideas and concepts that you readers who are the real horror gurus share with me on a daily basis. Sure we get alot of 'cook's and detractors who dont like the concept of some random guys reporting on horror but your real and honest conversations are definitely a highlight.

This leads to todays editorial which began on Twitter in a conversation with one of our twitter-verse friends Weegzilla who reminded me of an icon of horror most of us would likely overlook as an Ultimate Horror icon at all, The Wicked witch of the West from the Wizard of Oz.

I am pretty confident at this point half of you are shaking your heads thinking ‘there he goes again off his medication’ and the other half of you are likely thinking ‘damn good point’. The Wicked Witch of the West is not somebody I would normally think of as an icon of horror and terror but when Weegzilla brough it up they made a great point. When I was a child and watched The Wizard of Oz I loved every moment of it. Dorothy, The tin Man the Cowardly Lion and the Wizard himself. But the one moment that struck absolute terror deep down into my childhood soul was the Witch from the West.

What makes her terrifying is not that she mutilated and dismembered Dorothy like its an Eli Roth film or that she gets it off camera in the broom closet ‘JAWS’ style. What makes her so terrifying is the perfect mix of creepy cackling, evil ambient music and those damn flying monkeys. The lead up to her first appearance in the film was well played and when she does finally arrive I remember thinking to myself how much I wish the cowardly lion.. wasn’t such a wussy. J

What do you think? Is the Wicked Witch of the West from Oz one of the most  overlooked icons of Horror ? I like Weegzilla think so and I didn’t even realize it until they brought it up with me on twitter. The very first on screen bad guy or in this case woman that left me in a cold sweat and having nightmares was indeed the Wicked Witch of the West.  Leave your comments and as always if you have a horror question feel free to drop us a line on Twitter or Facebook. We read and do respond to as much of it as humanly possible!
