James Cameron Talks Piranha 3D! 3D Horror Movies Suck!
James Cameron re-invented 3D filmmaking with Avatar and in my opinion single handedly breathed new life into 3D films and their potential. Unfortunately since Avatar studios have been clammering to catch a piece of that golden goose by converting their films to 3D in post production. James Cameron is 100% right in his thoughts on how its bastardizing the market for the rest of the REAL players in 3D.
I have preached it here for a long long time and can not agree with him more if I tried. In a recent interview with Vanity Fair he makes the point of exactly what is wrong with all the 3D Horror Movies that have been released so far much more eloquently then I could telling them his thoughts on Piranha 3D and the recent spat of 3D films;
“You’ve got to remember: I worked on ‘Piranha 2′ for a few days and got fired off of it; I don’t put it on my official filmography. So there’s no sort of fond connection for me whatsoever. In fact, I would go even farther and say that… I tend almost never to throw other films under the bus, but ['Piranha 3D'] is exactly an example of what we should not be doing in 3-D. Because it just cheapens the medium and reminds you of the bad 3-D horror films from the 70s and 80s, like ‘Friday the 13th 3-D.’
When movies got to the bottom of the barrel of their creativity and at the last gasp of their financial lifespan, they did a 3-D version to get the last few drops of blood out of the turnip. And that’s not what’s happening now with 3-D.
It is a renaissance—right now the biggest and the best films are being made in 3-D. Martin Scorsese is making a film in 3-D. Disney’s biggest film of the year—’TRON: Legacy’—is coming out in 3-D. So it’s a whole new ballgame.”
Mr James Cameron is spot on and his point will be proven when Resident Evil Afterlife hits theaters in 3D this September 10th in TRUE 3D. Shot on 3D cameras, not done in post production to, as Mr Cameron puts it 'milk more blood from the turnip'. Now just as I am about to conclude this piece I want to make an about face and completely disagree with James on his one key point. Piranha 3-d works in 3D Because of the context. Piranha 3D is intended to be your classic 3D movie experience. Its not about intense visuals and an over the top realistic experience.
Piranha 3-D is all about 3D fish jumping out of you in a cornball way, severed penis's flying into the audience and naked underwater dance routines featuring Kelly Brook. Piranha 3D works because of its context for the same reasons that Drive Angry 3D will suck!
