Horror Contending for Best Screenplay

With the Oscar bait settled into theaters; the campaigns for the voter's support has only just begun.  Most high profile is Pixar throwing all it can into trying to nail Toy Story 3 nominations in any category (especially Best Picture).  However with Variety publishing the WGA list for eligible screenplays for 'Best Original Screenplay' and 'Best Adapted Screenplay'; a lot of focus has fallen on Toy Story 3 (and others) has been deem ineligible.  This being mostly due to the WGA's strict rules about entering a contending screenplay for Guild vote.

But who cares about animated toys?  Buried within the list of contenders for the coveted spots are a few (and one extreme) long-shots and sure shoe-in coming from out own genre!

Best Original Screenplay

  • Frozen
  • Splice
  • Black Swan

Best Adapted Screenplay
  • The Crazies
  • Let Me In
  • Shutter Island
  • The Twilight Saga: Eclipse
Now obviously these aren't the nominees.  However it does bring a smile to my face to see a film like Frozen lining up alongside Inception for a chance at Best Original Screenplay.  Grant it, my enthusiasm is only slightly tempered when I see Burlesque (which I think if trying to place should be 'Adapted' as it's more of a Showgirls knock-off) on the list...but whatever.
Now will any of these films get a spot?  Out of all of them, Black Swan the only one that really stands a chance.  Of course the 'H' word will be downplayed as Oscar season gets into full swing.
