Sky Captain World of Tomorrow Review
The story is set in late-1930s New York City and follows Polly Perkins (Paltrow), a crack reporter working on a story about numerous world-famous scientists who have mysteriously gone missing. Suddenly, all heck breaks loose and strange flying machines threaten Manhattan while gigantic walking robots trample city blocks.
To get to the bottom of it all, Polly joins forces with her old flame and sometime adversary Capt. Joseph Sullivan (Jude Law), known as Sky Captain. He commands the Flying Legion, battling bad guys in his Warhawk P-40. Dashing, huh? Sky and Polly fly to a remote part of Nepal (think Shangri-La) to track down the crazed mastermind Dr. Totenkopf, who wants to destroy the world.
Jolie plays Capt. Franky Cook, an associate of Sky Captain and Giovanni Ribisi stars as Sky's gadget-apt buddy, Dex. Bai Ling also has a small role in the film. So the movie is a digital picture, with almost 100% animation, and although it is very creative at times it was annoying. The look and feel was deliberate but it looked to me like somebody was acting in front of a scene, not in it. That was a major turn off for me. Also although the animation was well done it wasnt THAT amazing. I know alot of people will egg me for this, but it wasnt exactly cutting edge.
I think Jude Law delivered in this movie, and then again when doesn't he? Paltrow also did a fair job and brought her role to life on the screen. Jolie who had a small role did not really appeal to me. I like Angelina as an actress but something about this role just bugged me to no end. So the good parts of the film
Jude Law delivered his role well, as did Gwyneth Paltrow
The FX although at times looking weak to me (un-animated sky effects) were creative and unique
The story was excellent. I think the whole concept and the delivery of the film was outstanding. On the creativity level this script delivered and the movie flowed well for the most part
Now unfortunately for the bad.
The FX at times made it look like the actors were not even in the scene.
Jolie's character really did not do it for me. The accent? The role? I dont know what it was, it annoyed me.
At times the Indiana Jones aspects of the movie irritated me.
Movie felt a bit stretched near the end, with attempted climax's that did not quite reach.
So overall I give this film a 3.5 out of 5. It is a worthy rental, but if your not a fan of animated films I am not sure if you will truly appreciate this film. For people who like a strong story, lots of animation, and Jude Law, this film is for you. For the rest of you, perhaps try another film.
