Deep Rising Review 5 Stars!
When John Finnegan's (Treat Williams) boat is taken over by his passengers and he is taen board the Argonautica, they are surrounded by death. They also soon realize the crew of mercenaries that took over the ship are also responsible for the ships situation and are in fact hijacking it.
Survivors Trillian and the ships builder Simon Canton (Anthony Heald), and others talk of sea monsters, but Hanover the leader of the mercenaries(Wes Studi) doesn't believe them -- until the fanged, squid-like creature (designed by Rob Bottin) extends its huge tentacles and makes its presence known to all. These creatures are fantastic and creepy, digesting you rather then biting you up, with some great FX displaying this nasty ordeal.
Deep rising has a stand out cast. Treat Williams delivers 100% as a bad ass with a heart who runs a ship that does jobs without asking questions. His character is well developed and the acting is top notch. Famke Janssen also delivers as the thief Trilllian. there is no weak actor in this film.. The characters are believable and you grow fond and attached to them within the first 20 minutes of the film. I must add that Famke is mighty fine and adds some great eye candy as well as great talent which is rare.
If you are big on great gorey effects as well as amazing special effects Deep Rising delivers. The FX in this movie are as good as anything you will see today. The directors carefull use of FX, camera tricks and the cast to build a great atmosphere is one of the key great points of this film.
This is the first movie I have reviewed that has gotten 5 stars and it is deserving. From great stunts, to great fx, and a stand up cast this movie is nothing but action and fun from start to end. The director does an outstanding job with a script that just does not stop.
The big question of mine and many others is where is the sequel? Stephen you need to stop messing about with your other films and give us Deep Rising 2. Bring back the original survivors and deliver us to Eden with a fantastic sequel!
