Len Bernhardt the famed author of "Reign of the Dead" who was interviewed recently(you can read it here) by MoviesOnline has reviewed the Dawn of the Dead Remake and here is what he had to say.
I've heard it said that this is 28 Dawns Later. Well, I don't think that I would go quite that far, but it is similar.
The New Dawn of the Dead is good. Is it as good as the original? No. It has none of the magic that the original had, but it doesn't lack on action. There's even an attempt to include the humor that the first one presented with such great success. It works to a point but in the original the humor was presented for the most part without a word said. Here, it is given to us in quick one-liners from spoiled rich guy "Stephen Markus."
In truth, I'm not too keen on comparing this version with Romero's They are two separate animals. I am assuming some of the minor plot holes (like how did they know which boat belonged to Stephen) were created when slices of the film were left on the cutting room floor to be brought back for the DVD.
Dawn 2004 is entertaining. It's a scary good time at the movies and I guess that's what we pay our $8 to see. Go see it. You'll have a great time. Just don't expect to be having nightmares about this one years down the road.
