Keener and Page are in The Basement

Catherine Keener and Ellen Page are set to star in Tommy O'Haver's The Basement. It was scripted by O'Haver and his partner Irene Turner which is based largely on actual court manuscripts.

The Basement centers on Getrude Baniszewski (Keener), a seemingly ordinary housewife and the mother of seven, who imprisons a beautiful teenager Sylvia Likens (Page), who has been left in charge, in the basement of her Indiana home.

For anyone who has read Jack Ketchums novel "The Girl Next Door" you will already know how disturbing this movie is going to be. I'm not sure how much they will tone this story down and I imagine if they are going for a "thriller" most of the violence and cruelty will be significantly dampered. Ketchum's novel is also due for a big screen adaptation soon as well so it may have a bit of competition down the road.

At the end of this month The Basement will begin filming in Los Angeles. Keep it here for more news on The Basement as we hear it.
