HBO Brings Preacher to TV

HBO is developing a one-hour series based on the Vertigo Comics title, Mark Steven Johnson (writer/director of "Daredevil" and "Ghost Rider") is writing the pilot and Howard Deutch (director of "The Whole Ten Yards" and "The Replacements") is attached to direct.

Preacher tells the story of Jesse Custer, a down-and-out preacher in a small Texas town who is accidentally joined by a supernatural entity named 'Genesis', which is the product of the unauthorized, unnatural coupling of an angel and a demon. Given immense powers, Custer goes on a journey across America in search of God, who has since abandoned Heaven. In tow is his old girlfriend Tulip, and a hard-drinking Irish vampire named Cassidy.

Considering how dark, violent, and unapologetic toward matters of religion this brilliant series was, I can't help but wonder how much it will be tamed for television.
