Sweeney Has To Shave...A Lot

Tim Burton, a director we are all familiar with. A man with a distinct visual flair and a rather odd sense of humor. He treaded in our genre with Sleepy Hollow, a film thats fun to watch and has a nice amount of blood.

His new flick Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street, a horror-musical hybrid with Johnny Depp has gotten some amount of press coverage as it is a rather odd sounding sorta revenge flick. Depp plays Todd, who uses his barber shop to kill those who wronged him and his fellow tenant Mrs. Lovett (played by Helena Bonham Carter) cooks their remains into meat pies. Sounds tasty don't it?

Well, Burton apparently didn't skip on the red stuff. The folks over at ArrowintheHead found that someone connected to the film contacted The Daily Mail that the studio heads (a mix of Dreamworks, Warner Bros.) are freaking out by the amount of bloodshed in the film and are demanding a lot of cuts to make it...you guess it. PG13.

Here is what the insider had to say: "Tim's not happy that the studio is asking for so many cuts to the cutting, as it were. The thing is, the studio really really likes the film and they want to make it accessible to as big an audience as possible - which means stemming the blood flow. But thats a bit of difficult for a story involving a guy who gets high slitting throats."

Yeah...the studio suits must have been asleep at the wheel if they thought a film about a crazed serial killing barber and a woman who makes remains into meat pies will get PG13. For Pete's sake...apparently Johnny Depp sings a number while slicing away! Another scene that has freaked out the suits is one where apparently a young boy cuts up body parts for the meat grinder.

Now, I know most studio execs probably read the whole script or at least enough of it and see enough stuff to get a good idea of where the director intends to go with a project before being Greenlit. I mean, its their money.  They must not have been paying attention at all during those meetings if they think it could be PG13.

Sweeney Todd slices its way into theaters (hopefully in R rated form) this Christmas.
