Zombi 2 Review

10 out of 10 Skulls

i finally got my Shriek Show Uncut Edition DVD today. And i am impressed by far. This was one of the best 99 minutes of my life. The gore, the girls, the guns... it was all the best. The opening and the ending is one of the best by far that i've ever seen.

The movie starts off with an "empty" boat in the new york harbor. Once the coast guard boards the boat. All hell breaks loose. Once this hell breaks loose, the movie runs a little slow for a bit. Revealing your characters and basically leading you up to one of the best last 15 minutes of film, only to be topped by Day of the Dead 6 years later.

Now when i say there is gore in this film. I mean there is gore, the goriest gore of the 70's. An example of this would be when a zombie gets it head smashed in with a big cross and the head burts into little pieces. Or when the lovely Olga Karlotos (shower scene!) unfortuantly gets her eye impaled with a big splinter.

Ok most people give this movie flack because it has some plot holes and also the famous question "Why the hell didn't Olga knock the piece of wood out of the way?" Simple, it adds tension to an already wound up film. So that didn't make sense, did it make you hurt? i think it did. And the music is just great. Its electronic (really, they went heavy on the synthesizers). But it adds pacing to the movie. Even at the slow parts it went faster. The main theme sticks out in my head because it was the most played but it fit almost any situation in the film.

As far as acting is conserned... i was impressed. i heard it was awful. i didn't think so. i thought it was pretty good. Lots of good character interaction. always kept good vibes when they were together. If Fulci was alive today to see what his movie has become in the year 2005 i bet it would have put a smile on his face. His style of directing this was just brilliant. The closeups, the panning shots and everything was just plain good. He had a good script to work with and a very good cast as well.

The Cinematography was just great as well. on my DVD i noticed all the shots were perfect to the situation. and the colours were perfect. Its just good shooting. So whats the final verdict? Zombi 2 better than Dawn? not quite. Dawn had dark humour which this lacked. but then again i'm sure someone could find something funny in this. i didn't. this goes as a tie with dawn.  BUY IT!
