Mimic Review

8 out of 10 Skulls

I'd been eyeing Mimic for quite sometime before I took time out of my schedule (that I like to say is occupied) to watch it.  I heard numerous rants about the film, all positive at that and I decided one day just to see what I was missing out on.  Turns out I was missing out on quite a bit more than I would have ever thought.  Mimic isn't your average chase and kill creature-feature.  This film holds something more unique which I guess you could say is the reason I was hooked the instant I began watching.  The creature effects are absolutely amazing and crap-your-pants scary at that.  I mean seriously, this film takes one of mankind's most feared insects, the cockroach, and makes it into something that seems ten times worse.  Personally, I hate the damn things.  I always keep a can or two of Raid around the place to reassure that the little bastards can't get near the house.  But, that's completely beside the point.  The point is, if you're scared of cockroaches, you haven't seen nothing yet.

The story follows a team of brilliant scientists out to find a cure for a deadly disease carried by cockroaches that appears to be taking the life's of children across the entire city of New York.  What they come up with is a new breed of insect that mimics the cockroach and eventually wipes out the entire disease for good.  Things are just fine and dandy until the scientists realize that the insect they created has morphed into a terrifying monster that appears to be mimicing something far more intelligent than cockroaches...humans.  Now, the scientists are in a fight against time to save not only their own lives, but the rest of mankind.

What a crafty little story, eh?  It sure struck me as interesting.  In fact, the next day after viewing the flick I ended up purchasing a copy for myself that I could have the pleasure of viewing again and again.  And yet I continue to wonder off topic.  The script is well written and pieced to together intelligently.  You know a story is good if you actually believe that what is happening on film is taking place your life.

As I stated early, the special effects are absolutely superior.  I mean, I was surprised to see that Stan Winston was nowhere to be found in the credits for this is the work of someone just as good as him if not better.  I really wish I could explain in great detail the look of the creatures, but the description is just too amazing for words.

Academy Award winner Mira Sorvino, Jeremy Northam, and Charles S. Dutton make up the main cast and boy did they do a damn good job.  I had no trouble believing their actions, feelings, or dialogue.  They were amazing.

As I say time and time again, the direction is one of the most important aspects of the film aside the story and here it really couldn't have been better.  I mean, the scenes involving the msot action were incredibly shot and the director didn't cut back and forth leaving us wondering what is happening?  No, none of that cheap crap is present hear.

Mimic literally had me petrified to my couch.  I tell no lies my friend.  If you want a scary creature-feature, this should definitely be at the top of your list.  And for all you gentlemen out there looking for a movie to get your girlfriend grabbing all over you, well, do I really have to continue?  No, but seriously, check this out.
