Slither Review
Written by: fireyredhead
Have you ever just wanted to walk into a theater to see a movie and just KNOW that it was going to be good? I know that as a person who has been burned by Hollywood horror, it feels damn good! Slither delivers on all of its promises to be gory, funny, well timed and well acted. And thank the Gods it wasnt a family film!
Slither starts us off in sleepy little Wheelsy, a quiet town in the south. Youve got the hero, Sheriff Bill Pardy (Nathan Fillion), the town rich guy, Grant Grant (Michael Rooker), his completely unadoring wife, Starla (Elizabeth Banks), and the town mayor, Jack MacReady (Gregg Henry.) We are given a peek into these people's lives as a "visitor" plops into the picture. Starla is never in the mood, Grant seems somewhat controlling, Sheriff Pardy seems to be getting a sore arm from the torch he's been carrying for Starla and the Mayor, well I'm still trying to figure out how he got voted in. He's not exactly the brightest bulb in the chandalier. Grant has decided he's had enough rejection from his lovely wife and heads down to the bar where he finds someone to take care of his issues. But out in the woods, staggering around drunk, Grant gets side-tracked by some sort of blob. Oh My God it sticks him and takes him over!
The events that unfold from this are hilarious, I mean laugh out loud hilarious. But never fear my fellow horror fans, there is plenty of "ewwww" and "gross!" and "WTF?!" to go around! Between the Mayors lines "It tried to get in my mouth! What kind of thing wants you to eat it?!" to the fantastic makeup and special effects, Slither will not bore you in the least. The sound effects were pretty awesome too. There were a couple of times I has to squirm in my seat to keep from looking behind me on my chair because I swear I could hear the squish squish of little slugs crawling up the back. And for anyone who played the ultra addictive video game on horrormovies.ca, you will get an extra chuckle when you hear the lines in the movie that were in the game.
Both my thumbs are up to James Gunn, who directed this little masterpiece. He truly looks out for the horror fans, not just what the studio wants. All in all, this is definitely a see-it-in-the-theater movie. One could wait for DVD, but you would miss out on the great sound effects and the general creep factor of the big screen. The acting is dead on and the chemistry between all the players is undeniable. At last, a horror movie for the horror fan!
