Zombie Review

6 out of 10 Skulls

Lucio Fulci's Zombie has been praised for years. Almost every horror/movie website that i have visited credits this film as the second only to Romero's Dead series. My response to that is, what the hell is wrong with these people?! After hearing so much about the film i finally gave in and got it. Let me tell you now that i was not impressed. How anyone could compare these to Romero's films is beyond me. The acting in this film was subpar to say the least and the characters reactions to the who situation was hardly belieavable.

Richard Johnson was the only actor in the film who managed to proove his worth as an actor. The dead are walking around eating human flesh and the response from the cast is, "Well this sucks" instead of any real shock. Throughout the film i waited for the dialogue to get better. It didn't. I won't get into the details, it just wasn't that good. The movie's audio wasn't much to scream about either. The one thing Fulci did manage to do right in this film was the gore. The scenes in which characters met their untimely and gruesome demise really showed just how much effort they put into FX. Now if only Fulci and the rest of the crew could have made everything else work. As good as the gore was, it didn't make up for the rest of the film's faults. One thing I've learned from modern horror films is that gore and special effects is not what makes a movie.

Fulci focused to much on the gore and not nearly enough on plot, or character development for that matter. This movie is overrated and over praised. If your looking for a similar deep plot and subtleties found in movies like Dawn of the Dead, this isn't the right movie for you. The eye impaling scene is worth a look though.
