Infection Movie Review
Written by: deadmanwalkin Going into this movie, I really had no idea what to expect. All I knew was that “Infection” is the first in a series of J-Horror films, the DVD cover was “kick ass”, and that I’m a fan of Asian horror. Now that I’ve seen this film, I can honestly say that I’m going to have a “love/hate” relationship when it comes to “Infection.” 'Kansen' means Infection and the story revolves around a strange little hospital with weird patients and even weirder staff. Part 1 of 6 J-Horror Films. Death is just a breath away in this horror film from Japan that is set in a horrifying hospital whose overworked staff is busy covering up their own malpractice until one patient exhibits gruesome, and deadly, symptoms - and then disappears. One by one, as each of the staff becomes infected they exhibit some very strange and destructive behavior, (which makes for some really cool scenes: a nurse sticking hypodermic needles all over her arm). Then as their insides begin to liquefy they bleed and spew green ooze all over the place – it’s easy to say that it can get quite messy at times. This films does many things “right” and even with it’s minor shortcomings we still get a pretty solid effort from Masayuki Ochiai (Director), but then in the last 15 – 20 minutes, Infection begins to die from it’s own infectious self and falls into the same shortcoming and traps that have plagued so many recent Asian horror films. If it wasn’t for the “WTF” type of ending.. which I’m still confused on. “Infection” would have been an instant addition to my DVD collection. A solid effort from the main cast, even though (at times) we do get a little overacting from some of the secondary characters. They did a fine job of portraying the exhaustion and anger one might feel from being overworked, as well as the stress and tension from covering up an accidental death. Some of my favorite moments of the film were when a character would get infected and eventually “wig out”. The SFX was one of the constant bright spots for this film. Some of the effects where used for “shock value” (nurse placing her hand in boiling water), while others were for straight out gore. There was a good balance of both types of effects for the film. Was able to keep everything under control for the majority of the film, and then everything fell apart at the end. He also introduced some secondary characters that didn’t add anything to the film.
