LovecraCKed! The Movie Review
Written by: Goon When I recieved this movie it didn't hit me right away what it was about. It actually wasn't until I got ready to pop this bad boy into my DVD player did I realize that this movie was in fact an anthology if Lovecraft stories and a little bit of a biography of the man. Now if you dig Troma this movie will be right up your alley. If not you might as well stop reading right now because this film isn't nearly as funny or gross as some of the favorite Troma films. All of the stories in this film either turn out really well done or really bad. You don't have much in the middle. That was part of the problem with this film. It would bounce all over the place and you have no idea what to expect.. But not in a good way. Case in point Re-Penetrator. Now I'm a red-blooded male and I enjoy my porn as much as the next guy. But this new upcoming trend of "horror porn" is one of the worst ideas I have ever heard of. Granted their is alot of blood, guts, and goo everywhere it just doesn't work in this soft core edit of the full film from Burning Angel. Including this in the anthology is almost like giving H.P. Lovecraft a swift kick in the balls. In between each of the short stories is a ongoing telling of H.P. Lovecrafts life and peoples opinions on the man. Now almost all of these skits are not all that funny and for the most part drawn out. But I do have to say the funniest part of this was the interview with Lloyd Kaufman. Unfortunately they kept splicing in footage of a buisness man being hassled by the investigative reporter. But Kaufman on screen was definetly worth watching despite the annoying interruptions. All this said there were still some very impressive shorts included in this anthology. My favorite being that of "Chaos of Flesh" by Grady Granos. You may be aware of the story if you have seen the Masters of Horror episode "Jennifer". It was filmed in complete black and white which gave it a nice eerie feel. Another very good short included in the anthology would have been "Bug Boy". Another short filmed entirely in black and white but with a more Cronenberg twist. It was something straight out of the movie "Fly". Several of these directors definetly have a good future in front of them. Their shorts were well shot and managed to capture the Lovecraft feeling. The main problem I found with this film was often not funny wise cracking of the investigative reporter who introduces each of the tales. Not to mention some of the stories were more of a slight on Lovecraft than a homage. This is a community member review and not a staff member review. We appreciate and respect the opinions of our readers and are gratefull that they took the time to contribute it.
