The Descent (2005) Review

10 out of 10 Skulls

There are very few movies that deserves a "10" rating, and The Descent most definately does. I have to admit that im not really a big fan of most of the newly horror films that have came out in the past months or so.I'm very picky, I'm more of a Saw and Texas Chainsaw Massacre type guy. I like to really pay close attention to the trailers first before I go and waste my money on just about anything. Kind of like the grudge but anyway. When I first watched the trailer to The Descent I was not impressed at all. I thought it was just dumb.

I didn't like the whole idea of it. But, it was one of those times when I said to myself, "just give it a try" and i did. I was very impressed. In the beginning just like most horror films they try to make you understand the characters alot and show how close they are with a billion of unnessary scenes trying to get the audience to understand how close the characters are with each other. I kind of got bored to tell you the truth but once things started heating up ( and it really did) I was very drawn to this movie. Jumping to the conclusion, I really liked the ending. It was different from almost every horror film i've seen in awhile.

Having an "all female" cast and with the ending it was just great. Now with what i didn't like; I didn't really like the killings in this movie. It looked very elementary to me and looked very fake. Like it just didn't look real at all to me but i did kind of like it though because it kind of made the movie look original and not "over done" with effects and such. Also, I wasn't really scared at all, this movie was sort of a walk in the park. I didn't like the scene when the bats popped up totally fake i just didn't like it. Other than that I think the story, plot and bad ass ending really scored points in my book.

I think I really under estimated this movie at first and I highly regret doing so. Very emotional, I love horror films with alot of emotion and makes you feel sorry for the victims instead of cheering on the killer (which we do mainly when to movie sucks). I think the emotion and intensity level of this movie made it really score a 10 rating regardless of if it scared me or not.I think this movie would go on my top 10 list for sure and can't wait to get it on dvd. If you haven't seen it please do, you wont regret it!
