Feast (2005) Review
Written by: Hard2Kill
First of all let me say outright that this movie kicks serious ass, I love this movie from beginning to end. The other thing is that because it has recieved so much good press and reviews I am going to be a little hard on it in my review. Ha Ha I said hard on. Anyway I wanted to make sure that everyone knows that even if I point out a few faults my love for this film is huge. I was lucky enough to have this movie play in a midnight showing in my town and it is a small fun theatre to go to. I picked up some candy at the dollar store and a few friends and headed out for a great time and was not disappointed in the least.
The crowd in the theatre cheered for the heros and laughed and jokes, it made it a lot of fun The story is simple and doesn't try to make itself too complicated as you go through the movie either. Local patrons at a hole in the wall bar in the middle of nowhere are attacked by a group of nasty, horny, hungry, monsters. One of the great things they do is in the beginning as they are intruducing the characters they do a little profile for each giving name, fun fact, occupation, and life expectancy which some are hilarious. The characters are all really well written and you see a lot of familiar faces. Henry Rollins who ends up in pink sweat pants at one point, funny in itself. Balthazar Ghetty who is total trash but makes a kind of anti-hero. Jason Mewes or the Jay half of Jay and Silent Bob playing himself and you'll recognize a few others.
They all do a great job playing the horror and comedy angles of the story and never miss a beat switching from one to the other. Now for my only complaint, sometimes the action scenes are cut so fast it's very hard to tell who or what happened until the damage is dome or the person is mangled or eaten. During these scenes the blood flies and so do the body parts but I feel if they had been slowed down just a bit they would have been more effective. Scene Spoiler Alert: There are two scenes that blew me away in this flick that I have to tell you about simply because they are absolutely the greatest thing ever. The first is one of the smaller monsters gets inside the bar and moves so fast it's hard to tell exactly what it is until it jumps on a stuffed deer head on the wall and start to hump it, absolutely hilarious.
The second is one of the creatures gets it's cock and balls cut off and it flops around on the floor for a while until it's crushed under boot, that was nasty but holy crap was it funny. O.K. back to the review: All in all this movie is great and I hope it spurs a surge in hollywood to make horror movies fun again. Don't get me wrong but I am a little tired of the remakes and the ghost story thing and films that take themselves too seriously. That's fina and all but we the people need to stand up and demand more flicks like Feast. Movies that are fun, energetic, gross, irreverent, and unappologetic. You know, like a fart in church, wrong but pretty funny. Enjoy this film when it come to DVD, get your friends together, order some pizza get some of your favorite drinks and have a good old time.
