Saw 3 Review

8 out of 10 Skulls

First off let me start by saying this is my first review. I rarely get a chance to see movies right as they come out and by the time I do everyone has already posted everything there is to be said about the movie. The exception this time is Saw 3, a film I had been anticipating since rumors began that it was even being produced. I am obviosuly a huge fan of the franchise and thought saw 2 was brilliant, but after seeing Saw 3 i can honestly say it did not live up to my (perhaps unreachable) expectations.

The marketing and online buzz for this movie had me beleiving his was going to be one of the msot extreme films I was ever going to see. Much in the same way as Hostel, for me personally the hype made the experience less enjoyable because I was expecting so much more. I was expecting to be shocked (which I never am anyways) and while the film is extremely graphic and at times gratuitious, it didn't live up to my pre conceived notion of how the film was going to be.

Now to the plot. This installment seemed to be missing the suspense the first two (in particular saw 2) seemed to be oozing with. The twist at the end almost seemed expected but perhaps it was because this IS the thrid installment and each one seemed to have a twist at around the same point of the movie in each one. *SPOILER* I was however NOT expecting the end to play out how it did with Amanda being killed off as well as Jigsaw. As a huge gore hound I was really hoping to see Jigsaw get butchered to pieces by that circular saw and when there was mere throat slit I was more then a little disappointed. It's going to be very interesting to see how Jigsaw and Saw 4 plays out because I honestly have no clue.

The traps in this one, while just as if not more brutal then saw 2's, seemed to be almost a little too elaborate. The limb twister (forgot what jigsaw actually named it) was almost painful to watch. I saw many people in the theatre covering eyes and alot of "oh my gods", especially during the pig grinding scene. I was also glad to see that bitch detective from saw 2 be ripped in half, I hated that bitch. And the chains...yikes. I read a review byusomeone else who said the first fifteen minutes of this film are more brutal then the first two, and he was right but the chain scene alone was one of the most brutal scenes I persoanlly have ever seen.

Overall Saw 3 was a solid installment to what Im sure will go down as one of the greatest horror sagas of all time. While I dont think it was as good plot-wise as saw 2, you can never really ask for the same movie twice and this this one will be just another part of a masterpiece horror story.
