Silent Hill Review

Let me start by saying I have never played the game so I did not know what to expect from this film going in. Based on the other Video Games turned movies I didnt have huge hopes for the film and did not have a game plot in my head to compare against.
I think I will start with the positives. The surreal atmosphere was creepy and I really enjoyed the camerawork. The CGI was good, although there were a few scenes where it was a little overstacked and came off a bit clunky but overall for a very CGI heavy film I thought they did a really good job. To further the CGI angle though, I felt a lot of the script was written solely around putting in CGI and having shock scenes, not furthering the plot. The scenes were cool but the script didn't have a good flow to it and left a few headscratch moments.
I know after the film when you think back to the story there were a few moments that had absolutely no point. In the hands of Argento the story would probably be a 10 but Dario wasn't involved and the film couldn't pull off the Susperia type status where the visuals actually override plot. I am giving this one a 7 which I feel is a little high probably but the acting was adequate, no award winning performances jumped out at you but there were no glaring flaws either. The music was excellent and the cinimatography was great. I definatly recommend it as a rental for movie night and as long as you take it for what it is, it is a decent watch. On a side note, I really think they should leave this one as a stand alone and not attempt to crank out 3 sequels. I don't know what the plotlines were for the games but I for one would not shell out the money or 2 hours of time to watch a part II.
