Grindhouse Review

10 out of 10 Skulls

I'd like to start off my review by saying how much of a fan I am of actual old Grindhouse films.  I'm talking old 70's exploitation B-movies that make the mainstream audience cry in their seats.  Now,  when I heard that Quentin Tarantino and Robert Rodriguez (two amazing directors) were gonna each do one segement of a double bill attraction, titled "Grindhose", in homage to all those under-appreciated B-movies, I was hooked.  I was hooked like a deer in head lights.  Then, to make it even better, when I found out that directors like Eli Roth, Rob Zombie, and Edgar Wright were gonna each make a fake trailer to put in between the two films, to make it seem more realistic, I wet my pants.  And not with urine.  "Grindhouse" is an experience that's not soon forgotten.

Up first, was "Planet Terror", a zombie film about a mysterious gas that becomes exposed to a small Texas town, turning everyone into melting zombies.  Literally, they melted.  Anyways, this segement was great.  The story was fun, the acting was superb, the FX and make up were out of site, and the overall "feel" of the film was just right.  Robert Rodriguez certainly proves that he knows the B-movie genre all to well.  Watch out for "Planet Terror", it's great fun.

Next up, is "Death Proof".  "Death Proof" was another kickass segement.  It was actually probably my favorite out of the two.  That is, if I just had to choose.  Continuing on, this one starts out as a dialogue heavy chick fest, but turns into a rip-roaring car chase with FX that will you blow you away.  The story, acting, FX, and feel, were no different then "Planet Terror".  All fantastic.  And, to all those that say "Death Proof" was full of stupid and useless dialogue, I say your wrong.  It all leads to something, and if your a fan of Quentin Tarantino, then you would know that by now.  This guy knows the exploitation genre better than anyone, and certainly can mix hot chicks, blood and guts, smart dialogue, car chases, and revenge, all into one action packed flick.  Watch out for "Death Proof".  It redefines the term, "badass".

First up, was "Machette".  "Machette" was a lot of fun.  Danny Trejo, the machette carrying badass, knows how to handle his enemies.  Complete with laughter, Cheech as a priest, tits, and action, "Machette" was truly a trailer that you would see back then.

Next, was "Werewolf Women of the SS".  This was another great trailer.  Written and Directed by Rob Zombie, this one mixed nazi's, werewolf's, and tits.  What more could you want?

Third up, was "Don't".  Aw, Edgar Wright's "Don't".  This was a funny ass trailer.  Paying homage to all those "dont" films, "Don't" had the whole theater in laughter.  Especially, from the very funny cameo by his boy, Nick Frost.  If this ever gets turned into a feature length film, I'll be the first in line to see it.

Lastly, was Eli Roth's "Thanksgiving".  This is by far, my favorite trailer out of the bunch.  As if it weren't obvious.  Now, I know it got leaked out onto the web about a week before "Grindhouse" was even released, but seeing it on the big screen, was even better.  Plus, you could actually tell that the crazy pilgrim was fucking the human turkey at the end.  Exploitation at it's best.  Loved every second of it.

Overall, this is a must see for all fans of the genre.  Scratch that, this is a must see for everyone.  Especially, since it's doing so poorly at the box office.  Go and see it.  Take an afternoon off and see this attraction.  Don't pass this up on the big screen, it's way to much fun.  I'm not lying, when saying that this is the best film to hit cinema's in a very, very long time.  Do yourselves a favor, and see this now.  And remember folks, you can see "Planet Terror", "Death Proof", and all of the wonderfully made trailers, "Only, at the Grindhouse".
