Black Christmas (2006) Review

4 out of 10 Skulls

The dopiest slasher movie since "Urban Legends: Final Cut". First-time helmer Glen Morgan borrows from his longtime partner James Wong's directing style by making this tasteless remake a "tongue in cheek" affair. It doesn't take itself very seriously, but is filled with lots of gory killings.

I didn't see the late Bob Clark's 1974 original, but I was told this remake has more in common with "Silent Night, Deadly Night" (1984). It's about a young boy who was sexually abused by his mother and than was condemned to an ayslum for the insane for killing her. 15 years later, he escapes and returns to his childhood home on Christmas Eve, where he finds a bunch of sexy sorority girls "celebrating" the holiday. Unfortunately for them, "Billy" is ready to slay again!!

The movie is "by-the-numbers". It's filled with the scenes in which helpless women walk into dark places all by themselves despite knowing there's a crazy person in the area. This brainless bunch eventually get what's coming to them; they all get killed in big, bloody ways. This movie, like "Final Destination 3", suffers from a predictable plot. It's unimaginative and only works as a guilty pleasure. Skip it and watch a movie like "Night Watch" instead.
